David is my biking buddy whose wife was killed by a driver who was "looking at some papers" and ran them down on their tandem (on a very wide open flat country road -- we're talking half a mile's visibility) ... we went to sing at the nursing home last night and none of us had any idea what condition eh would be in. I am totally humbled and awed. He cheered us on and sang along...

Wow - what a story. Thanks for sharing.

"More than $2000 in fines..." to the driver. Horrifying. He ended one life and irrevocably changed another.

Well, yea. OUr state's attorney and a few other folks have pretty strongly come down on the side of "hey, it was an accident, too bad so sad!" -- and have not uttered a word to indicate they think that drivers should be responsible for seeing bicyclists ever... I remember doing a double metric in the boonies and coming across a like-minded soul on his bike who was from a town about 50 miles from here, who had also been hit by an aggressive driver in CHampaign -- he said "hey, everybody knows Champaign County is where bicyclists get run off the road." (Unfortunately, I know it's not particular to us -- one of these days I **am** going to get my little cell phone with the Killer Kryptonite Ray that makes cars sputter and cough and only go 21.5 mph.)

only in my case, the kryponite cell phone would have to slow them down the 16 mph so that I could catch them and beat on their cars, preferably on the roof just above their heads and scream at them , especially if it was all legal and there would be no liability involved.

Very inspiring story, but shame on the officials who only fined the driver 2,0000 because it was an "accidnt." That's just excusing irresponsible behaviour.

David's always been develoomentally delayed, by the way... our state's attorney has a very consistent history of saying "that's all I'll get a conviction for" despite other cases where other lawyers did.
