Some winter pics from my towpath walk this morning

I walked into town to do some errands today and came back along the towpath, while the snow fell and fell. The canal was frozen solid, apart from one short stretch. Here are a few pics.

    Thank you!

Shannon, the bike will belong to one of the canal boats moored alongside. Most of them carry bikes on the top, and put them alongside when moored up. The canal network in the UK is pretty extensive and combined with bikes allow you to cover a lot of ground.

Hard to tell, but my guess is a coot.

I think it's a moorhen, which is like a coot only smaller and with a red beak rather than white. There are quite a few of them on the canal.

I'll be off along there again tomorrow, as I have an ebay package to post. It's been snowing again today so should be very pretty. Pretty is good, but I would still rather be out on my new bike.

    How lovely!

But why in the world would someone leave a perfectly lovely bicycle out in the snow? Oof.

I love all the little bird footprints! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for snow here.

Great pictures. The snow covered bike looked so forlorn.

The canal boats are interesting, at first I thought they were for some kind of commercial application but looking over the additional pictures at your blog I see they are in residential neighborhoods and your description of the canal system is interesting, something I did not know, so I see how functional the boats are.

Many areas of Michigan and Florida have inland waterways and series of canals too.

The water in my lake is all frozen over so the ducks, geese, swans and other assorted waterfowl have moved to rivers with open water so I don't see them daily. It's so interesting to see real time photos from other parts of the world!
