    Getting More Comfortable

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I have a real problem getting comfortable on trails I don't know well. It is almost guaranteed my first time at a trail will suck. My husband, women who lead rides and my teacher say I am too nervous and a way better rider than I let myself believe.

Today for instance we pre-rode the trail for my next race and I was walking things I could ride (especially downhills). It is like I was too nervous to see a line. I did almost another full lap and was much more loose, reading the trail better, etc... But not every race I have time for multiple pre-rides and we like to go try out new trails.

Any suggestions to believe in myself on new trails or ones I don't ride often?

I do the same thing. I 'm learning to accept it, rather than beat myself up about it. Some days I rock, and some days I suck.

I read a tip once that, when you're tense and nervous, you should smile. Smiling forces you to relax. I dunno how it works, but it does! I can feel my whole body just sort of melt. Try it!

I have had the same problem - I've only been riding for about 3 years, so I don't beat myself up over it TOO much, but here are some recommendations.

I've found that when I'm out doing my own thing on a familiar trail, I'll go explore a new part and have no problems. I believe this is because I can go at my own pace, that I don't feel pressured - which is funny because I'm the only one ever pressuring myself! So after a few times of trying a new side trails, I've gained alot of confidence.

Also - sing! If I'm coming to a new part that I'm not so sure of, I'll put a tune in my head so that I don't listen to that "other" voice that tells me to dismount, and before I know it I'm thru that area

    Good luck!

    The singing thing is great.

Also, nothing like a skills clinic to build your confidence.

Someone told me to try to smile. I am just a nervous person, funny thing is if I ride alone I am most of the time way more comfortable. It doesn't feel as safe if I were to wreck though.
