What I saw today on my ride...

I live in the country and went out this morning at 9:45. I rode for 1/2 hour and only passed 3 cars. Ahhh...that is why I like where I live! However, the best thing I saw today, about 25 miles into the ride, was a newborn (and I mean newborn!) calf. I swear I must have missed its emergence into the world by moments. When I rode past, it was trying to stand (unsuccessfully) and the umbical cord was still hanging from the mom. There is nothing like witnessing new life to motivate me! It was precious.

You really are lucky to have seen something like that! My husband is from Central Penna (I'm a Pittsburgh gal). I love it there---we've thought about moving to Gettysburg, which is near where he grew up. He said he wouldn't mind the commute to DC, but I'd definitely have to quit my job and stay at home! It's tempting, especially after reading your post.

Oooh, how wonderful - that would have really moved me as well. I just love baby animals of any sort. I adore seeing baby goats or lambs on rides, but have never seen a calf quite that young - you're very lucky!

Hey guys I had to put this in although I wasn't on my bike at the time. I was taking my boys to swimming lessons and as we drove down the road we passed a guy riding down a fairly busy road on a unicycle juggling.
My oldest son (7) says mum that is a bit dangerous ( Im thinking yep on so many levels) why isn't he wearing a helmet.

The kids thought it was great and all I thought was hell he keeps a better line than me even juggling.

I'm still having difficulty not falling over while doing anything on two wheels...like looking around or try to see if a car is approaching from the back. When I was tootling along on the Amish ride this weekend I was wobbling constantly trying to look at all the babies!!! I kept shouting to my SO, "honey LOOK there's a baby lamb/duck/goat/horse/kitty"...it was awesome!

On Satudray I saw a house on fire. Help was already in front of the place, but I had the chance to direct one volunteer fireman's truck to the right location. Lots of excitment for our little rural community. I usually just see fields of soy beans and "amber waves of grain".

MickChick - I live near Gettysburg, actually about 20 miles south of there in MD. I wish I could talk my husband into moving up there too but he commutes down to Dullas as it is so that would really be stretching it for us.

And isn't it great fun when the loaded farm trucks pass you, the way the corn and soybeans falling off the truck feel like bb's when they hit your skin?
