So, my car got broken into for the second time this year while I was riding.
SO irritating.
I feel like I should be able to cover the stuff and ride my bike without worry. Seriously.
Sympathy? Commiseration?
I wrote about it on my blog (below)![]()

Oh, that so blows! I don't know if it would help, but I leave my stuff in my car in a dirty old dark colored rubbermaid bin since I don't have a trunk (drive a Honda Element). It helps that the windows are tinted, and the bin is tucked up behind the back seat kinda low down from the windows so isn't easy to see. There's only one place I go riding that I actually drive to, and it's a fairly busy park, so I don't worry too much about break-ins, but I am cognizant of it.
You lost some really nice stuff -- I'm so sorry. Not to mention the pain of having to get your car fixed.![]()

Kacie! That SUCKS! Where did it happen? Your blog said something about S. Fulton - was it on Silk Sheets? That royally sucks - I always felt real safe down there.
For 3 days, I get to part of a thousand other journeys.
Bin is smart. Then they could see that there is nothing they really want!
I was parked at Stonewall Tell Elementary. So frustrating!
Last time I was robbed I was at mile 0 of the Silver Comet Trail on a rainy day when no one else was there.
One other car that did not have a trunk was broken into. I drive a little scion xb box car!
I had my stuff covered up too!

Oh, that sucks. I'm glad they didn't get your wallet, though.
Did you file a police report? If nothing else, it will contribute to the law enforcement stats for the area in which you parked your car.

So sorry. Stupid thieves. Something tells me they'd break in even if they could see in. Desperate people... someone here last week was caught breaking into a car taking $.35 they saw on the seat. That was all that was there.
So sorry...![]()

My guess is that if you have a bike rack on your car, people familiar with cycling on a trail would know that you don't have a lot of room on a bicycle to take your valuables with you. Therefore, even if they're covered up, if you're parked at a trailhead with a bike rack on a vehicle.. you probably just took your keys, phone, and wallet with you and left anything else of value behind..
This is partly why I try to bike TO the trail to start my rides - then I don't have to worry about losing much!

That is exactly what it is. I, however, am a triathlete who lives in the dead-middle of atlanta, which is not known for it's bike friendliness. I need to my long rides on my tri-bike, and I do not ride that bike in the city (brakes are separate from gears, and it is dangerous). I have to drive somewhere. I guess I just have to hide things better, and hope for the best in the future.![]()
Sorry to hear that Kacie. You don't have a GPS mount on your window do you? That's a red flag for thieves. Stupid jerks anyways!
kacie - I'm sorry - that sucks!
Can you get some type of locked metal box bolted to the inside of your car? Then you could put your valueables in there and leave the car unlocked. That way, at least you don't have to do car repairs each time it happens.
When I lived in Boston, that's what I had in my Jeep. I NEVER locked my doors because my soft top cost more than anything I had in the car. I figured I'd rather they just open the door over cutting through my top! Plus, when you leave the doors open, I think they figure you have nothing of value anyway.
It happens a lot at hiking trail heads as well. Theives figure it'll be awhile before you are back, so they have time to get what they want and get away....

GLC--I have heard that one before, but never really had the guts to do it. Maybe it's time to though! It's tough, because there is always some kind of gear that I need to have with me before/after a ride.....something to consider though!
In better news, Ironman people looked in their warehouse and found my sweatshirt in my size that they will sell me...so it is on the way to my house. Good thing too, cause I loved that shirt!
