    Nishiki Riviera mixte 49cm

For Sale: Bright Red Nishiki Mixte 49cm

Well, feel my pain. I LOVE this bike…, but my wife does not. Period. No mixte-type bike for her. And I’ve been given my marching orders to sell this. Boy, does this hurt!

Because of all the help and friendly advice I’ve received here, I’ll put this up here first. It will not be cheap, as it didn’t come cheap and I’ve invested in a number of upgrades. I offer pretty much everything that has been seen in the various photos, except the Blackburn rack (already on my ’71 Gitane) and the squishy Schwinn spring seat (that was a $5 swap-meet find). The original saddle will be there.

Otherwise, the original stem, bars, grips, brake levers, cables, toe clips and straps, as well as the new stem, bars, grips, brake levers and cables (new Jagwire brake cables alone were $25).

As can be seen in all the photos that I’ve posted (only a select few of which are below), this bike is brand new. It is a NOS bike from a bike store that went out of business. It is a very, very lovely bike. I can tell you that I do NOT want to sell it, but we live in a small place, and it’s in the living room. I’ve been given marching orders.

Okay, enough of my whinging. The Details:

The bike is in perfect shape and condition. It has no scratches. Tange 900 double-butted tubes and all aluminum alloy parts and components. This bike is lightweight. It rides like new because it is a new bike. This bike was made in 1984 according to the serial # (KD11 766). The paint is still shiny like when it was made. Everything on this bike is original, and all upgrade optional items are brand new, too.

    Handcrafted by Kawamura
    Make: Nishiki
    Model: Riviera
    Year: 1984
    Made in Japan
    Color: Pearl Red
    Serial #: KD11 766
    Speed: 12
    Frame size: 19' or 48cm
    Frame: Tange 900 Double Butted
    Frame type: Lugged
    Handlebar: WIN-alloy
    Handlebar stem: Alloy
    Brake levers: Dia Compe-alloy
    Brakeset: Dia Compe size pulled-alloy
    Shifters: Suntour Power-alloy
    Derailleurs: Suntour RV-alloy
    Crankset: Sugino VT-alloy
    Pedals: MKS AR-2 Japan-alloy
    Pedals Clips: Nishiki
    Hubs: Sansin-alloy
    Rims: Araya 27" X 1 1/4"-alloy
    Tires: Cyclepro 27" X 1 1/4"
    Quick releases: Front & Rear
    Seatpost: SPK-alloy
    Saddle: Nishiki by Vetta
    Kickstand: Greenfield-alloy

US$400, plus shipping. The bike is in Northern Virginia.

I will do majorly careful packing. Because of the extra bars, etc., I may consider shipping in two boxes. Final decision as I pack. I will do this carefully to insure costs are kept to a minimum. This is a special bike. I hope whoever takes it finds as much joy in it as I have.

    Cheers!

Man I'd almost be interested in that bike. But I have no place to keep a 3rd bike. Sigh.

I love my wife. More significantly, she loves me. That would be much harder to find.

Trust me, she'll have to listen to me moan about this for ages. (Or, she'll have to forgive my next bike acquisition!!!!)

    Still...

    sigh.

This will go to Ebay as a last resort.

    I'll entertain offers here.

    Bike Forums will be next.

I just don't really want to go to Ebay, unless I must.

    Anyone?

That bike is gorgeous. And I'm pretty certain it would fit me. And it would look lovely in our garage next to Betty (my VW Beetle awaiting restoration) even if I rarely got to ride it.

Let me run this by my husand. Stay tuned...

Actually, there are mixte frames in 56. Sometimes, even larger. They are rare, of course, but they do exist.

Many of the smaller frames have longer (virtual) top-tubes than the seat tube length would suggest. This frame, for example, although a 49cm, has a 53cm top-tube.

Still a tad smaller than you might want, but still more generous than you might think. This is true of the classic mixte design in general.

People keep nibbling, but no one's made an actual offer.

Please don't make me take it to E-prey!

According to a gracious PM received this morning, there IS a 57cm Peugeot mixte on the D.C. craigslist. Don't know if they'd ship. I merely pass this one on to those who need the bigger frame.

But for the somewhat more diminutive rider, nothing will be as lovely as this bright red Nishiki.

I WILL entertain any reasonable offer from this list. Want just the drop bars, etc? I'm open.

I am continuing to chant "I do not need a 5th bike, even if it's red"

And I don't want to insult you with my budget.

Ugh - that's how I'd want it! Stop sweetening the deal, turning this down is hard enough as it is!

I just came in here to say that I'm going to pass. As much as I'd love to own this bike, it really should go to someone who will ride it more than I would. Plus, I'm saving my pennies for a tri bike for next season.
