    MAYbe I'll swim

After a great swimming week last week, I seem to have forgotten how to swim. *sigh* I did 2000 yds today, but it was mostly pushing myself just to burn the calories. My form was... feh... at best. I felt like I was fighting the water. Oh well, there's always next week.

Yesterday's long swim was pretty good, although I started getting a bit dehydrated (first sign for me, in the pool, is nausea). I always bring water w/me, so I made sure to drink after every 500 yards after realizing that I wasn't hydrated enough. Managed to get in my Saturday 4,000 yards.

Roadie, don't feel bad. My form is always "feh" but workable. If you look around you in the pool, you'll see a wide variety of swim styles. My goal is endurance and the more time I spend in the pool, the better my form comes and the faster I get. I'm hoping to hit 150 miles by June...

Swam 500m today, in 45 mins..hahahaha. But I was a happy camper. Used flotation belt for about 200, did baby kicks for 100, and swam with pull, using BOTH arms, for 3, yipeee. Tomorrow 700!

I am still doing poorly with swimming, though my boyfriend/coach says I've gotten a lot FASTER.. I'm still not that much more efficient or have that much staying power. I get bored with swimming so much faster than running or biking.

500 yards or so today with a couple drills. Maybe I should just do duathlons?

That's awesome! Now don't overdo it.

Good going! Glad to see you out there swimming.

Yesterday I did a total of 1900 yds. The indoor pool was really crowded because it had snowed 8 inches the night before so no one was in any outdoor pools. There was so much sloshing that it was like an OWS. But it went much better than last week.

Good for you!!! That's awesome that you're back in the water already!

Yesterday I did another 1650 yards, and although I'm knocking roughly a minute off my time at this distance each week, I think that's largely because I'm taking fewer/shorter rests. I'm so mechanically inept in the water that I can't physically figure out how to go faster. On the bike or running, it's innate--push off harder, switch gears, you're going to go faster. And you can feel/see immediately when you're going faster. Not so in the water. I pay attention to my form but if I try to "push off" harder I just feel like I'm churning up the water more, losing my form, and going no faster. Slower, even, if my form falls apart. So my heart rate goes up, I exhaust myself, but I'm not getting any faster. But at least I'm at the point where I can just keep going at the swimming equivalent of a nice stroll for a long time.

Try thinking about just one thing when you're swimming. Like making your fingers go into the water like arrows, or getting a good catch as you push back. Or forget about what your arms are doing and concentrate on your kick. Sometimes I'll just think about making the ends of my feet like mini flippers. Or I'll try to make my kick as silent as possible.

Don't worry about what your arm is doing out of the water. That's the recovery phase and it has little effect on your speed. Unless you're like slow motioning it back.
