    Dry Milk

    I would really like to stop wasting milk in the fridge so it would be great to make it a quart at a time. The problem is the dry milk I currently buy is from Aldi and doesn't have the best drinkability but fine for cooking and yogurt. Do any of you find that some brands are better than others for taste?

    Have you tried rice milk or almond milk at all? They taste fantastic, and you can buy them in smaller sized boxes, that have a fairly long shelf life. I cook with them as well.

    I agree, Rice, Almond, Soy milk all have a longer shelf life and taste good. And they are also good for cooking.

    Rice and almond milk won't make yogurt at all (nor will oat or hazelnut milk). Soy makes the best yogurt. Hemp will culture but not thicken.

    But as far as dry milk, I'm only aware of soy and dairy.

    What other types of recipes are you adding the dry milk to?

    Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately my GI system doesn't do soy very well. I'm hypoglycemic so I have avoided rice milk thinking it might aggravate that. Almond milk I have not tried so I will get some of that at Trader Joes today and try it out. I can keep using the Aldi milk for yogurt if need be I really just wanted to find a milk that would taste a little better for drinking. I am not a huge milk drinker but as I'm getting into longer runs and bikes I'm starting to do recovery drinks more and I use milk in that too. I guess I don't have any specific recipes per se I'm aiming at because I primarily use my yogurt for baking. I just remember my mom mentioning other brands of dry milk that she thought were pretty tasty. I think one was Similac? Can't quite remember any others.

    What about Parmalat shelf stable milk? I actually really like how it tastes, and it keeps for a year (I think) at room temp. Of course, once open, it does spoil. But not so quickly as regular milk. It makes yummy yogurt too.

    Before moving in with Mr. Milk Drinker, I bought 1/2 gallons of organic milk (I can't remember the brand, but it comes in a red carton and is avaibable just about everywhere) because it has a much longer sell by/use by date than regular milk. I could usually use all of it before it expired.
