If your commute is 25 to 30 miles each way, you're looking at 50 to 60 miles round trip - wow! Is this going to be an everyday ride, or are you planning to commute only part of the week? My commute (from North Andover to Burlington & back) is usually shorter than what you are thinking about. I have a 34 mile minimum (16 miles in, 18 miles out), but I often add some miles on the way home to bring it up to around 40 miles. I believe I'm quite a bit older than you, but I think that 50 to 60 miles plus working all day would not be something that I could sustain. If it were me, I'd probably need to drive part way...
That aside, on to some of your questions. Oh wait - I have another question for you. Have you ridden on the Minuteman bike path? I haven't, but in my experience bike paths in this area are overutilized and are not the safest places to ride. A mix of bicycles, runners, walkers, roller-bladers, folks with baby strollers, etc. - and people usually don't have a clue what to do if you call out "on your left"! It may be rideable on your way in to work, but I'd be concerned about its state in the afternoon.
I've ridden on Memorial Drive before, but only on the weekends. It seems like that would be a natural end to your ride if you're heading to the Galleria Mall area, but it may be possible to cut through north of there on somewhat quieter streets. I would bet that Spazzdog has some ideas for that area (just based on where she lives!). Spazz?
I think you have a lot of guts to even be thinking about riding in to Cambridge, and I'm assuming you are talking about semi-normal work hours. Any options to avoid the heavier traffic times?
I'm afraid I wasn't very helpful; sorry, I tried! I'll definitely be interested to hear how your commute shapes up - please keep us posted!
