We had to put a bike to rest last night and DH is very depressed about it. He had been fixing up a Trek 2120 and was in the process of upgrading to a full 9 speed ultegra drive train. Just yesterday he was able to install the pretty new shifters and took the bike out for a quick test ride. Just as he was coming home and turning onto our street his chain broke. He didn' t know what the sound was right away so he took a few more strokes and the blasted thing swung up, broke his brand new rear derailleur in half, whipping through the wheel and catching on the stay. A spoke was broken and the bottom part of the frame where the derailleur gets bolted in is bent at about a 75 degree angle.

We just put about $500 into upgrading this bike and now he needs to buy a new one. He debated buying a frame and new rear derailleur and moving everything else over but he really doesn't have the time to work on a bike from ground up again. I felt so bad for him, he was so sad last night

awwww.. I am so sorry to hear that!! It sucks to put a lot of money into something. But more into something that you love and to have something like that happen. I know I would be pretty ticked off. I think I will let my skilled BF do all my repairs or I may have a similar story to tell

That's such a bummer! It always stinks to have to chase good money with bad. We just took my SO's bike in for some work and I kept seeing her over by the new bikes looking at them longingly...I think we may be paying a buncha $$ to pick up her old bike and picking up a new one too.
