Please help me to get started on a goal that I have had for a number of years now. I would like to ride my bike on a regular basis and need a little motivation. Any help would be appreciated.

wheeeeeeeeeeeeee have you Ever come to the right place!.....we've got your motivation, your major support, great advice and just general high jinxes right here all with Your name on it!! first and foremost if you get a chance - there's a thread under open titled "getting to know you", gives you a chance to meet us and tell us about you.
Then if you get another chance in all your spare time ( ) pop over to bikejournal.com. It gives you a place to set a goal, log your miles, and join our team: Team Estrogen. That way you can track what you'er doing And watch as your team completes it's goal too!
and Welcome to the Board!!!

Welcome,

She's right you have come to the right boards. I have been here but a short time but everyone is really supportive and wants to help. Most of us have likely struggled with getting motivated to ride. So come on get on your bike and turn over the cranks one will lead to another and before you know it you will be sharing with us your accomplishments on a bike. Trust me it is more fun to ride your own bike then to watch some guys riding around on TV.

The place to start is to find out why YOU want to bike. For health? Lose weight? Sexy biker legs? Something to do with friends or family? Once you find your personal motivation, it's much easier to visualize the result and get up and go.

Personally I ride in the morning before work, and sometimes it's tough to get out of bed and get right on the bike, especially those 30 degree winter mornings. My motivation is fourfold:
1. (guilt) my BF is waiting for me to meet him and if he bothered to get out of bed I'd better too
2. (vanity) upcoming wedding photos
3. (health) the bloodlines want me to be a bit ... thicker ... than I'm comfortable with and it's a constant battle to stay in my size 8s.
4. (competive spirit) a lot of friends are quasi-competitive athletes -- rowing, cyclilng, marathons, tri's, skiing -- I like to keep up

Anyway ... it works for me.

Welcome to TE, Happy!

Yeah... def ride lots

And find your motivating factor - I have three

Be with my family as their increasing interest takes off

Change my body shape to resemble something which it used to

Thrash my partner's sister this year in a TT (she doesn't know I'm training towards it - one of the reasons I am not cycling in any races yet except for fun rides with my youngest children...)

Once you have motivation, its easier to make time to go for a ride...
Once you are on the bike, its easy to enjoy and just wanna keep staying on...

Looking forward to see you post heaps... the women here are extremely supportive and if thats what you wanted, thats what you'll get...
