This particular article does not mention it, but Mr. Frederick WAS wearing a helmet at the time of his accident.

That's very sad. This is from another article in the same paper:

Saturday morning, Frederick’s friend Bill Hancock went to the mailbox. Bill was in shock — he and Frederick had shared so much, including their love of cycling. When he opened the mailbox, there was a postcard that Bob Frederick had sent, probably on the day of the accident. It was to encourage Bill to bicycle in the ride across the Flint Hills.

“The scenery in the Flint Hills is always fabulous,” Bob had written, and he underlined “always.” And Frederick ended by saying he would go for as long as he could pedal.

    Yes, very sad story.

What ride was he doing? Our first thought was BAK but that was in Eureka 100 miles or so away the day of his accident. The news has been much more focused on him being the former athletic director at KU than on details of what happened.

From what I've read, it sounded like he was out on a ride with a friend. You're right, the reporters focused on his prior employment more than the accident.
