Bento box lives up to its name!

We tried sushi on a long ride today!

We made up plain rice. Added some spice salt to one batch and - brace yourself - unflavored sports beverage powder to the other, and wrapped them up in nori. I only had long-grain rice around so it wasn't sticking, so took 2 layers of nori.

Then stuck them in my bento box wrapped in some saran wrap and behold, when we tried them about 1 hour into the ride, they were palatable and the nori had softened to a handy wrapper.

(just in case you are wondering - the classical o-bentô is a boxed lunch in Japan)

It'd be yummy to add some sort of fruit paste in the middle- like the inside of a fig bar.

I was thinking of nut paste too. Yeah - strips of dried fruit!

    Red bean paste - maybe?

Not sure about the drink powder. I love the spice salt, though. That would be yummy. Good idea!

Well the drink powder is almost flavorless.

DBF wanted a salty energy snack, hence the salt. We'll keep experimenting.

You could just make your sushi-su with extra salt.

Avocado would probably be a little much, but kanpyo, shiitake, carrot or cucumber should travel well.
