    Fat bum

    Hi Ladies -

I hope this is the right forum for this question.

I started cycling ( road cycling )serioulsly last summer, managed to pull myself up Alpe d'huez and the Galibier as a reward in october, but that was soon followed by not 1 but 2 fractures on my left wrist. Since I am back on the bikes i have been training quite a bit, a lot on the Fixed gear bike, but also quite a lot on hills on my road bike. I am not the best climber, so I have been focussing a lot on that. I have cycled about 2100km since I am back on the bike this february after the injuries.

    I wouldn't be the thinnest cyclist of all, I am 1,53metres for 63kg at the moment. ( that's 5 foot / 138pounds ) I wear a Sz 6/8US (10UK/38 France) Quite well proportioned if I may say so myself.

I have not gained any weight at all since i was off this winter, my weight remained the same, but I am a lot more toned than I was even last summer cycling. Just one thing tho, I can't get into my clothes anymore, they're all too tight around the bum, I think ,bum and thighs have tripled volume since last summer.

I am thinking the increase in training that i am doing on hills ( all my training has been on hilly terrain ) has made my glute and thighs bigger ... I was told once by a gym instructor that it was riskyy for me to cycle as my body type would give me 'big' muscles ... and as a cyclist, it's quite inevitable that I will be using my legs.

I am not a massive eater but I do allow myself some substancial meals when i am out for epic rides...

Anyone else has the same problem. I am a bit concerned I am getting too big.

    ...help

I'm not sure what subtabcial means, but it's better not to eat large meals even on long rides. I would say especially, but you know your body better than i do.
I have found that i have gained weight and muscles in my thighs and probably my backside too, but it looks better than the pre-muscle state, so if i go up a size i don't care.

I'd rather have heavier better shaped legs and butt anyday. I have a cousin who has no butt at all. ! I don't think men like that either..

I agree that my legs look 10x better now than when I was a fat pedestrian - I am just concerned that, the muscle is building under the fat, that's still probably thinning as I go along, but i am not able to see that, I am just concerned that I have no control over my overall 'mass'.

I know that 3500 cal excess in a pound of fat, but I am no way exceeding that at all. And I do allow myself myself a chocolate bar the day i am cycling 100km in the Mountains But my 2000 cals worth of cycling more than makes up for the 200 cals bar...

i am all annoyed and confused

I didn't do it in a day, I did in 2 days: 102km on Saturday and yesterday 150km.

Just normal saturday spin and was doing a sportive in the wicklow mountain, where i live in Ireland yesterday I wouldn't be doing 2 epics in the mountains 2 days in a row usually, but this year i am training a lot with the boys so they're more adventurous than I am ... and they've something I don't have: testosterone... Hoping that will all be beneficial in the end ...

    Caroline,

    We could be twins!

I am also 5 feet tall, very muscular, and I weigh 138 pounds. I put on muscle easily.

I have very large quadriceps and calves and all of my pants fit tight around the thigh. My calves are so big that I have to buy special boots so that I can pull them over my large muscular calves. I have a personal trainer that tells me that I still need to lose a bit more fat before the size of my thighs decrease. The reason that they are so big is because I still have some fat deposits covering my muscle and also some fat in between the actual muscle fibers.

But I have to tell you, the muscle that is on my thighs is much more attractive than the fat that was there before I started to bike.

Also, I think that genetically, this is just how I am built. So I am trying to lose a little more weight and see if my thighs slim out a bit. If not, that's okay too.

This is all I saw in your entire post. You rode up Alpe d'Huez but you're not a good climber??!! Wow I think you're my new hero.
"How about if we all just try to follow these very simple rules of the road? Drive like the person ahead on the bike is your son/daughter. Ride like the cars are ambulances carrying your loved ones to the emergency room. This should cover everything, unless you are a complete sociopath."

    Ditto!

I too have the same problem... hugh thighs. I think that's just how our body is. Even when I did lost 10 lbs that I had always wanted, my thighs are still bigger then the rest of my body. The first that I lost was my boobs! As if I can loose more from a size 34B! I went down to a 32A. How sad is that! I would rather have larger thighs to keep my boobs! At least I can always wear an A-line skirt.

    Caroline & Over50..you 2 must be muscular.

Your legs probably could benchpress the whole of me ..I'm 5'1" but a completely different body type/frame (petite bones) and different weight category.

Congrats buddhabellies on the weight loss!

I am not a good climber, I pace myself very very well ( that's my excuse ) up a hill. The boys always wait for me at the top. When i went up Alpes D'huez, I arrived 20 minutes after the lads ... ( it's only a 14km climb) - I am no hero, but thanks

Thanks for the replies ladies, it does make me feel better. I am going to have a better look at the rest of the threads about weight and muscle mass. I am quite interrested in the Weight vs Muscle Ratio ... i hate to know that I am pushing unecessary fat up a hill and that slows me dows. I already have a carbon bike, so I can't make blame the bike anymore for being behind

If you can ride up Alp D'heuz, I WANT your thighs! Me me!!Im lucky to make 35 km!
I was a bit worried about big thighs, as SOMEONE at my house said, 'oh dont get those big dikey looking bike thighs, I hate those women, They look gross..'( Great thing to tell someone who recovered from eating disorder).

You know, I want GREAT BIG ONES now! Propel me thighs, freedom! The size of hams, win races! Screw pants, I ll happily wear a lines for rest of life, if I can win some races( or even BE in some races!)

Funnily, I told my BF that I was a bit sad Id never have long , hard thighs as cool as George Hincapie, and he wrote that no much he ( half ) denied himself food , he'd never have a chest like M. Rassmusssen( who frankly, despite his muscle ratio to mass, look like he's on his deathbed!!)!!
(My friends is a bit big and Im a bit small, and when we finally get to ride together( hes across country) he will no doubt be kicking my behind on flats as I wizz up the hills, leaving him behind.)

My legs are bigger too, and I only have ridden for about a year and a half.
Conquering illness, one step at time.
