There's a unicyclist that rides the lake trails around here regularly. He doesn't ever wear a helmet (or a shirt), but his seat is really high off the ground and I'm always super impressed.

He was wearing a helmet (yay safety!) and some serious biking clothes. He wasn't going very fast but he certainly made it look easy
Has anyone else seen a unicyclist or something unusual?![]()

Unicyclists are not that uncommon around these parts. There's a guy in the Seattle area that seems to regularly commute on one. And there's usually at least one person who does the STP on a unicycle.
My son's school has a handful of unicycles for them to try our during PE.I so wish we had had that when I was a kid.

Did someone say unicycle?....

I saw a group of them in Moab this weekend, can you imagine riding a unicycle on slickrock?!
Two years ago I rode America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride (72 miles around Lake Tahoe), and there was a group of unicyclists who also did it. Some of the descents were really fast, and unicyclists can't ever stop pedaling- amazing!
Passing them felt sketchy because they wobble around so much while riding, it feels like they might fall over into you.
At my one and only race so far, there were two guys on unicycles who started with me in the 18-mile run, but they had two courses starting at the same time, the other being 26 miles. I'm not sure which route they did, but they finished a bit after my daughter and I pulled in at two hours. I think they did the 26-mile route - they were uberfit people. Not an ounce of fat on them, and they rode shirtless, which shocked my 10-year-old, and helmetless, which shocked me.
I was super impressed all the same.

During the summer & fairer weather, I regularly cross routes with a commuting unicyclist in Bellevue, WA. I guess there is no place for him to mount a fender when it gets wet.![]()
There is a unicyclist that I see trying to learn to ride - he uses ropes between trees in my neighborhood park. Props for trying at least...
I've seen a naked unicyclist.... we ended up in the middle of a group of people on world naked cycling day - unlike the majority we were clothed in more than just paint...

My DH has and rides a unicycle (fully clothed!).
He doesn't take it out much anymore....mostly just to entertain the neighbor's kids every so often.
I've never tried it. Looks like an easy way for me to end up with a broken wrist...or worse!![]()

I saw a unicyclist cycling around town where I am a cop...I was off duty, and was watching him at a busy intersection. He went to cross, and BAM...hit by a car turning right. Unicycle went one way, he went the other. I don't think the car ever saw him. He was not wearing a helmet. He was ok, but wow.
I saw about 25 of them a couple of weeks ago tearing down the black runs at our local forest...mad crazy they were. Most with helmets, some with armour and some kids too. They were really nice and even let us have a go on their unicycles. It's pretty hard!![]()

I actually did a segment about the National Unicycling Championships held last year in the Black Hills. It airs on SDPB in April. I'll post a link to the online segment then.
It was a lot of fun to check out. There were down hill races, uphill races - well timed events. Mountain Unicycling Events, street stunts, obstacles, track events, pairs routines, unicycle basketball... It was a week long event, I didn't get to check out the pairs or bball activities.
If I ever find a decent unicycle on a yardsale or something, I may snag it and try to learn. Who knows.
I've seen a guy here regularly commuting on a unicycle with aerobars (or that's how it looks to me). The hills here in Wales are pretty tough even on a two wheeled bike with breaks. Going down 15+% grades an a unicycle seems like madness!
