    how much is enough

    I have been training for a year and a half, and have read several books, but really would like to know how much women are training in my age group 35-39 for triathlon. I am an intermediate swimmer, (500 meters 8:20), intermediate cyclist, and slow runner (10k in 60 mins). I swim 5 days a week, about 2200 average, spin 45 mins Saturday, ride 40-60k Sunday, and velodrome speed work one weekday, and run 30 mins x 2 days and 60 x1 day (except last three months with pulled calf muscle). Is this enough for my first HIM in July? am feeling a bit stressed and train with professional athlestes who are in their 20s, so don't know who to compare myself too, they are hard core and I am NOT them. Am I doing enough, or too little?

    Last year I started training for Barb's race in April. I kept a sort of blog here on TE about my training.

    I was happy with my training and how my race went. But I learned a lot and will change some things this year.

    I haven't even begun to seriously train for Barb's yet this year. March 15 is when I enter training mode.

    I am not sure what you are asking.

    Is that enough frequency, or is that enough volume?

    I have not done a HIM, but I have seriously studied a training program while considering one.

    Most of the schedules that I looked at had 3 workouts in each sport per week, but the volume of training was significantly higher than what you are describing here, with the long rides building to 4 hours and the long runs build to close to 2.

    So I am not sure if your plan is to slowly build your volume as you get closer to July, or are you trying to prep on the times and distances stated in your original post. If it is the latter, I would say no, it is not enough.

    I've only contemplated a HIM;
    I've seen one 10 wk training plan where you have to enter with

    a) being able to do an Oly without injury (wouldn't apply to me yet as I was out of commission for 3-4 days after)
    b) being able to run 20K. You'll definitely have to work on that (and I would, too)
    c) having "decent" (sic) base endurance

    But it's early in the year and you can start from here.
    Do you do hill clilmbing for strength? might be better than the Velodrome, I don't know. You can simulate that on the spin bike too.

    Ok, will try to be more specific, spend about 10 hours training a week, and really hoped I could avoid increasing that.
    I live (and train) at high altitude and hill climbing is basic to living in the mountains, so I do that on the "long" day, which is the only day that isn't too nightmarish traffic.
    I can finish an olympic in fairly good shape. I have NEVER run 20k, and plan on "inaugurating" the 20k DURING the HIM, running is not my strong suit, but I am getting slowly better (except the 3 month pulled calf muscle thingy problem).
    I was hoping 10 hrs was enough, but it sounds like it might not be. Where do people get the time to train more than 10 hours a week, I must find out what I can reorganize in my life.
    BUT I WILL IF I HAVE TO. I would like to do the HIM in 6 hours 20 minutes max. (it'll be Vineman 70.3 in July)

    this plan is the one I mentioned, and I'm sorry it is in German, has about 10h max. in the peak week. I don't know if it's realistic, I haven't done it.

    Www.beginnertriathlete.com has a 20 week plan that maxes out at 10hr/wk.
