I would say, experiment, work into it gradually and let the kid tell if you if it's working or not... and they will. Not sure about support for an infant body in a trailer, maybe that's why they want you to wait untill the kid can sit up. Start with around the block, then slowly add length to trips. Don't forget that they can get sun and windburned in a hurry.
One thing we did is had a baby seat that rigged up to the top tube, sitting IN FRONT of you, they can put their little hands on the handle bars. Much better balance that a fender seat ( not that you were going to do that) and you get to "be with " them more instead of them being all alone behind you. We built ours, they are available for sale but hard to find.

ps keep in mind that your pediatricain may not support you being active with your kid involved... but know that parents have gone before you!!
