SPD pedal & Look Cleat

I am looking to take a spin class and they told me they have SPD pedals on the bikes. I use Looks. Will my Look cleats work with the SPD pedals they have? I thought I had heard that they are compatible but I'm just not sure.

I don't recommend removing your Look cleats and installing SPD cleats on your road shoes (even if they'll fit). I don't like to mess with cleat position once I've got it nailed down. You may consider buying a pair of inexpensive SPD-compatible shoes (mountain shoes, commuting shoes, and indoor "spin" shoes are all generally SPD-compatible) and mounting SPD cleats to them.

Performance has a ridiculously cheap pair of forte shoes that I have spd cleats in for winter riding... and on my Surly... anyway, I got mine for $19 but they were on sale, but things are always on sale at Performance... just a thought. I also second the 'don't remove your road cleats' and the spd usually won't work on road shoes without a converter doohickey...

You might check and see if any of the spin bikes have both spd and look pedals. Some of our spin bikes have my favorite what I call the "red pedals". One side is spd, the reverse is look. Our looks however are the older style delta. One of the roadies that's not in my usual class supposedly bought some newer looks and they work on what we have. However, my favorite type of "red pedals" are expensive to replace, so we only have a a few bikes like that. For some reason, they clip in so much nicer. All the roadie folks always seek out those bikes first, vs our newer spd pedals only (they have removeable cage attachments). If you don't get to class early enough, and your bike is taken that you can clip into... your sorta outta luck.

Indeed the spin bike SPD pedals are not compatible with look cleats.

However, just a note (and that will NOT help with your problem): look cleats do tend to fit in Shimano ROAD SPD pedals (which have a similar shape), although not consistently, and do not guarantee safe unclipping if necessary. Don't try this at home!!

Some spin bikes have two sided pedals, one for looks and one for SPDs, and then adaptors with cages for those with sneakers.

Don't trust the gym people. When I first called the gym that I went to for spinning for a while, I asked about spd pedals and they said no, they didn't have them. Of course they did but the guy I got on the phone was clueless.

Some gyms let you bring your own pedals (and saddle+seatpost) - that depends on the bikes.
