Got a new Bike and ready to ride

Hi everyone! I am soon to be 48, mother of 2 wonderful girls, 21 and 22. I do not care for walking and after many failed attempts at becoming a runner,(I love the idea but my body hates it), I decided to return to my first love-- bike riding. I stumbled upon this site while googling "women and biking", it looked interesting so I decided to join. After riding my wal mart bike this summer I took the leap and purchased an upgrade. I purchased a Trek Navigator along with a computer, bike rack, helmet, bottle holder, and basket holder. Now this is very alien to me. I will buy things for my girls, the house, my husband, but never ever have I spent this much on myself at one time. I think I my daughter had not been with me I would have backed out. When I got on the bike at the bike shop my daughter said to me "Mom I have never seen you so happy you are grinning from ear to ear. You have to get this bike!" So I did. I had to order the rack for my vehicle which should be in this next week or I would be on that bike now.
In any event I look forward to posting my adventures in riding my bike.

Congrats on the new bike and riding. Its so nice that your kids will ride with you. I miss the days when they would ride with me. I almost had the 17 year old DD out last week but she backed out last minute. :0( Enjoy your new bike. This time of year seems to be the best for riding.

Thanks for the replies. I do so much love being with my girls, our favorite time together is walking the dogs on our farm. We did ride bikes this past spring but in the Arkansas heat we would not let the dogs go far. My favorite oldest DD bought a cheapo bike at wal mart (cheaper than my cheap bike) and it did not hold up after just a few rides so we were back down to one bike. Now that I will have my new one she wants the one I have from wally world which to my surprise for 100 bucks isn't to bad. She did hint that a good bike would make a great Christmas gift. My youngest DD is at the University so we do not get to see each other as often.

Congrats on the new bike. It may seem like a lot of money out of pocket, but the rewards will be unending. I hope you find as much joy riding as I have found with my bikes...

A Trek Navigator was my first "good" bike. I loved that thing! It goes anywhere. Congratulations and have a lot of great miles on your new bike!

Ah, your post makes me smile. You have a wise daughter.

I just bought a bike a month ago after decades of not biking and I'm having so much fun. This group is a valuable resource for information and inspiration.

I hope you have a great time with your new bike.

A woman on a bike pedaling down the road with the wind in her face. What could be better?

Congrats on your new Trek bike! I had a Trek too, it was the first new bike i'd had since i was a little girl. It is now being proudly ridden by my cousin on the east coast who had been riding her husband's beater bike.

I hope you continue to ride and have the same kinds of changes to your health that cycling has given me!

Hi today was my first ride. Bright and early this morning at 5 am. It was pretty good I only did 5 of the ten miles I routed but i was a bit nervous about the time. It felt pretty good to get out there after waiting a week for my bike to come in. I ended up with a specialized elite, it was a pretty comfy ride. So overall I feel pretty good about it some problems i did have was that it was sooooooooo dark outside. I am trying to stay away from the main streets but the side streets where i live have no lights. I did purchase lights for my bike but I guess i am just getting spooked out. Also my hands were pretty cold it was 55 in Michigan this morning. my body felt pretty good but i absolutely have to get some gloves for my hands. Overall though I think I had a pretty good first ride.

I know your going to enjoy your bike I am already enjoying mine.

ps my butt is a little sore...but i figure it just has to get use to the seat. It felt pretty comfy initially.

yes, you need gloves!! I have both longfingered gloves and short fingered gloves. COnsidering the time of year, you probably ought to start with the long fingered kind. remember, they're not just for warmth, they are protective gear.
5 miles is a long ways in the dark! great start.
