That's in Albany, just 40 minutes from me.
I seem to recall this same thing happening somewhere last year- a disabled man's special trike getting stolen (red, even)...and it was recovered a couple of weeks later, apparently the thieves left it in an obvious place so it could be returned. Either they had a change of heart after finding out about the bike owner, or (more likely) realized they had a bike that could be easily identified and they'd get the book thrown at them if caught with it.
Hope this guy gets his bike back too.

Oh that just broke my heart. It sounds like it isn't a bike he wants it is HIS bike. I hope it is found and he can resume his independence with joy.

I emailed the reporter to find out about making a donation. He says that at this time some Dept of NYS is going to replace the bike.

I agree that it sounds like he really wants HIS bike back. I hope it's found.

When CIndy and David had their tandem bike swiped here (she's blind and he has soem disabilities too), and it made the news, there were enough donations to get them a better bicycle. Hopefully this fella can get a thousand dollar trike and restore his faith in humans!

    Bike Thieves!

Bike theft is the WORST. To me, I feel a bike is such a personal thing. I don't WANT to have anything stolen, but my bike especially. Steal my car? OK. I have insurance, I can get another one and it will be exactly the same. But my bike? This is personal. This is a unique machine that I have pieced together over time. And I live in Portland, which is the best place ever to ride a bike, but also a bad place for bike theft. As if a thief would ever take all this into consideration.... But I can still rant about it, right??

It happens.... I don't think the thieves generally know the back story of who they are stealing from and I somehow doubt most of them would really care anyway. If they had that kind of empathy they would not steal from anyone in the first place....

Around here someone broke into a storage area and stole a number of adaptive bikes for a disabled children's program. As far as I know these were never recovered. A one legged cyclist also had his customized single crank road bike taken - I'd have loved to see someone try to ride away on that...
