My name is Annette, and I'm a nerd

I was in San Diego last week for the big GIS Conference. Imagine 14,000 cartographers just roaming the streets and you'll have a good idea of the dork factor involved. I walked into the gift shop and immediately found my first purchase of the trip. Yes, I bought a cycling jersey promoting mapping software. Come on, ladies! Let's see your "nerdiest" piece of cycling attire!

Wow. Another GIS analyst. So am I. I missed out on the annual conference. I had some business travel to West Virginia.

Cool jersey, and although ESRI is the primary software vendor, I'm not sure I'd sport their logo/jersey around. You use the software and peruse the forums no doubt, so you probably know what I mean.

Yes, but now we use the information in analyses in a lot of cool and different ways.

I did alot of GIS work in my former life...I'm glad to see ESRI supports cycling. I'd love to have one of those jerseys; perhaps they sell them on their site (?).

Well, my husband works for The Mathworks and I have one of their jerseys, complete with the names of all of their geeky software.

wow - next time I need help with Arc GIS I know where to post!!

Our MTB club got a grant for ArcGIS and we got it for $100, with no training. We've had various a couple of instructors from the U and the local Community college, and a couple of pros who help us out on task based basis. After a year and a half of working with our pet open space/trail inventory project, we kinda sorta know what we are doing but just barely.

    Yay!

To the author of the OP. Now that I think about it, I didn't mean to sound like I was raining on your parade, or pi$$ing in your cornflakes because you chose to purchase an ESRI jersery. The jersey is actually very pretty, and the weenie factor of choosing an ESRI cycling jersey at their GIS conference, and having a GIS person who cycles wearing a jersey from a mapping software company is amusing. I was merely making an off-hand tongue in cheek kind of comment based on some of the more common gripes associated with the company itself....

Actually, if I had one I'd wear it too - just for that nerd factor.

I don't know the first thing about GIS, but that's a pretty jersey -- nice colors and flattering cut. I'd wear it!

No worries, I've cursed out ArcMap more times than I can count. Just the other day I was screaming about the miserable clipping operation and how it kept crashing. Never imagined there were other GIS people on here, very cool!

The conference was alright. I'm not a big fan of San Diego, it'd be nice if they moved it to a different location every year. The Secretary for the Department of the Interior spoke at the plenary session and was very interesting. Quite the difference listening to him speak versus Jack I stuck with the technical discussions all week. Might as well take advantage of their knowledge while I can.

Wore the jersey for the first time last night, just riding on the trainer (I'm nursing my sprained wrist/thumb). It was actually very comfortable, maybe the most comfortable of my jerseys. Nice and long and loose enough in front to not show my lack of proper abs Three pockets in back, 3/4 zip in the front, and not tight in the shoulders (that tends to be a problem for me). I'm happy to be a cycling geek

Phrases heard on any given day on our office:

    "Dr. Watson?! Why??"
"ArcMap has encountered an error and must close. ARG!"
    "Jim, where's MxDoctor located?"

At the opening session they had a top 10 list of improvements coming up, and the number one complaint they'd gotten was crashing. They swear they're working on it
