    Patting myself on the back

Last night I just wanted to ride. Some days I do it because I know I should, but yesterday I was itching to get on the bike. Rolled out the door with no route in mind. Traffic prevented me from making the left I normally take, so I continued straight. And then I thought, "I can make it to the lighthouse." It's not far, maybe 8 miles from my house and I'd done the ride once before. But I remembered one hill. I recall struggling up that hill, nearly falling over at a measely 4mph, and when I got to the top I was so exhausted I nearly got sick and had to sit in some guy's driveway for a while to settle down. Last night I did 10mph up that hill! And when I got to the top, I just geared up and started pedalling down the other side, no need to stop this time! Fought the wind and made it to Lighthouse Point, turned around and headed back. Realized I needed a few more miles to make 20, so I took the extended route home. Got back home with 20.7 miles, and another first for me, my average speed was 15.2. I've been getting close to the 15mph mark, but never officially did it. I was beaming last night, so proud of the progress I've made.

When I got home, dad called to say he'd used the shorts we got him for Father's Day. Mountain bike style so he doesn't have to be seen in spandex, but can still have some padding. He really liked them and said he wants to start riding longer, and he and mom want to come to my place and ride since the shore is less hilly. I think they're getting the bug Yesterday was a good day!

Thanks guys! I actually passed a guy on his mountain bike (riding on the sidewalk) and he yelled "HEY! Slow down!" I just turned back and smiled.

Awesome!!! It's it a cool feeling when hills suddenly seems smaller or like not such a huge deal!

And what great scenery - I'd love to be near the coast again
