If you are using shimano (or sram) then 8/9 speeds play nice. If you have a 7 and want an 8, you'll need to build up a new wheel.

Okay, now the poop is really rolling downhill. Maybe, just maybe, "Do it now, ask questions later," is a crappy philosophy. I didn't even think of the hub issue. Is it 8/9 speeds that play nice, or will 7/8 play nice? Because at present she's a 7, and I have in my hands an 8. Thinking ahead is my new motto, I swear.

The good news is 8/9 speed hubs aren't that expensive. However, if you are using indexed shifters, you'll need a new one of those too.
