Indysteel posted about not liking the ipod and the headphones. I get annoyed myself about them -- the folk wearing them don't hear me when I "on your left" at them. She also mentioned that she's not a big fan of "in the ear" music anyway, and that reminded me of something:
My daughter has an iphone. I thought it was pretty cool, and that I'd have to consider getting one myself, come time to upgrade, until one day, when we were hanging out around the house, and she turned on the music.
No head phones, just her phone, in her butt pocket. (isn't that just cool?)
DH was in New Orleans that weekend, partying with some friends. There's usually "drunk calling" involved when he goes, so we did a perfectly sober drunk call to him:
"hi honey, just called to tell you, Alicia has music coming out of her butt!"
His repsonse? "Huh???? What did you say?" It was noisy where they were at the time, somewhere on Bourbon Street.
"She has Janis Joplin coming out of her butt!"
Keep in mind that on HIS end, this is a perfectly drunk drunk call and all the guys are with him, when he responds without missing a beat, "Alicia can fart Me and Bobby McGee? COOL!"
Pocket music, no headphones, that was the tipping point for me when it comes to getting one of them there Iphone thingies!
(not that I plan to have music coming out of my butt while riding -- my phone rang one day and a garbage truck kind of snuck up along side. I DO like to hear my surroundings)

funny story.
I like to hear my surroundings as well, but I can't ride without music. Very simple solution: I only wear the right earbud and I don't turn it up very loud. It is more like background music as I can hear everything going on around me. If someone wants to chat with me, I pull the right earbud out and let it hang down on my jersey. (I took one of those little clip thingys from my phone and clip it to my jersey) I only use it when I ride or go for walks, never had a problem.
And I have had plenty of music coming out of my bottom end, but nothing you would recognize.

I'm scared to ride with my iPod, even though I'd love to have some tunes while I'm out there. I just feel like I need all my senses on full alert in order to keep aware of my surroundings.
But I do love the iPhone (both my nephew and my brother-in-law have one) and it does make a nice little portable radio.
PS Two thumbs way up for Janis Joplin fans! (Even if she is singing out of your daughter's butt.)
Stoking the tandem one day I thought it was cool when a house we passed seemed to be blaring ragtime...when the whole street was playing it, I thought the whole yuppie neighborhood was tuned to the same local NPR or something, but when the uninhabited intersection was playing the same tune, I realized it was tandem captain Brewer's cell phone, ringing away in the trunk bag.
I use the Slip from Slipstreamz [URL="http://www.slipstreamz.com/index.asp"] It holds the iPod earphone away from the ear. So you hear the music but can also hear what's going on around you. I have no problem hearing riders approaching from the back. It also blocks wind noise. As long as the volume isn't too loud on the iPod I can still hear everything around me. I take the earphones out if I'm going to be on the road or in heavy traffic or just turn the iPod off. Since they block wind they also help keep the ears a bit warmer.
