So... this is sort of a cross-posting at bj... but I was pondering the "potential power of the internet for social change."

Saw this at the Trek site:

1world2wheels.org/blog

a nudge to get out and do the little stuff on the bike, like unto the 2-mile challenge

www.2milechallenge.com/home.html

(The Giant "ride society blog" had a nudge in *October* for folks to get out and commute... their blog has somebody post maybe once a week... or a month...)

... and the striking things about all those sites is they're pretty moribund (a.k.a. dead ), and they're commercial sites. I'm aware of just how many attempts at forums and communities exist - it's an art. It is, however, something just a few folks can have an impact on.

Compare that moribundity to

http://www.commutebybike.com/

which has *lively* - and positive and reasonable - discussions.

and www.cyclelicio.us/

and of course... HERE and BJ.

What if oh, three weeks before Bike to Work week we cruised tangentially related lively (and NICE of course ) online communities and lurked for a bit and then nudged folks to find their bikes and oh, drop in at some of the lively, encouraging bicycle places? I think there could be a pretty good bang for the buck as far as community interchanges go.

(Oh... and if a few people go and *comment* at the bike biz blogs, maybe they'll think it's worth saying more there...)
