Exclamation Help keep this a spam-free forum

    Hi folks -

Over the last few days quite a bit of spam has been posted to this board.

There's an icon in the lower left hand side of each message, a red-edged triangle, which is there to report an inappropriate post to the admin. When you click on it, it brings up a message screen where you're required to enter the reason why the post is being reported. I always just type "spam" in the box, that's plenty of reason.

Please don't follow the links that the spammers provide !!

Our fine admins are very quick to respond and the spam is removed in no time.

I do the same thing. I wonder how many "spam alerts" the administrators get on each new attack! But the spam always disappears pretty quickly! Yeah for the administrators!

Most of them are just blatant spam with links to other stuff. But I remember one that had some pseudo connection with cycling. Something like, "I don't know what kind of pedals I should use. Please click this link". Hitting message boards with spam is a pretty lousy way to spend your time!

I really love that little triangle option that we have available at this discussion forum. Really great for spam! Thanks!

Wow! There must be folks that are really quick with the mouse. I've never seen any. So, thanks to all the eagle eyes out there.

The triangle doesn't show up unless you're logged in. This may explain why I never noticed it before. Laziness prevents me from logging in when I'm just checking on things.

I have a recommended site within my signature but by all means it is not spam. It is a nutritional alternative from cooked foods. I have been doing the living foods or raw for a couple of months and it has given me lots of positive energy and good physical health.

Hmmmm .... is Spam considered to be raw or cooked?
I suppose that falls under the category of "you don't want to know"

according to most ancient internet guidelines, a sig file is not spam. Plus you participate, that's the difference. I've posted my business several times when it's relevant, but I've been here a while and I always have something to say.

    Thanks

I took it out just in case, but now that you say that, it makes sense. I just don't want to get bonked off cause I was not meaning to make trouble, I like it here alot.

    Spam jokes aside ...

AutumnBreez, I don't know where you got the impression that you would be kicked off of this board on account of a link in your sig line.

The spam (lower case) we have been referring to is when a post appears blatantly advertising "Low-Cost Phone Cards" or something along that line, from a brand-new member who obviously registered 30 seconds earlier for the sole purpose of posting their advertising to this list. Sometimes the spammers are a bit more subtle ("hey, I found this great deal on such-and-such, check it out") but the poster is obviously there merely to post their junk to this board. Often the same or nearly the same post appears under 3 or 4 different topic headings on this board.

Our admins have been very quick in removing such posts so I could understand how you would have no basis for comparison. But you have nothing to worry about.

jobob has it right, it's the drive by spammers that are a nuisance. Irrelevant spam posts, or even something that cyclists might like.... but they are only showing up to post an ad, not to be part of the group. My policy is to never, ever buy from spammers. PLus, when someone posts an ad at a commerical site, they are most likely violating the site policy. Anyway I think you should put your sig back, these spam discussions weren't about you.

SPAM=SPace Age Molecular Polymers! The more spam you eat, the better you'll look 1,000 yrs from now when they dig you up to as part of an archeological study!!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: "Yeah Baby! What a Ride!"

Expected Admin response times to spam

    Hi Everyone,

That last bit of porn spam sure generated a lot of spam reports! I was out of the office most of the day on Friday and TE is closed on weekends, which is why that spam stuck around a bit longer than usual.

If a post is reported during business hours (M-F 8-5 Pacific Time), it should get taken care of within an hour or two. Anything reported over the weekend will get taken care of on Monday morning -- so don't fret if the post you reported on Friday night is still there on Sunday -- you're not being ignored, I just haven't read your email yet
