    Brooks and Proofide

I bought a used Brooks for my new mixte a while back. It arrived in the original box along with paperwork from Wallingford Bikes. I'm just now getting around to proofiding it. I've always read on TE to put several coats under the bottom and on top.

The paperwork says APPLYPROOFIDE UNDERNEATH ON PRE-AGED SADDLES, NEVER ON TOP.

Why is that? Mine is not a pre-aged saddle. I don't think.....

If you put it on top of a pre-aged saddle, it changes the color and patina.

(I'd do it anyway, cuz I'd want my Brooks to last a long time and I don't much care about the pre-aged look. I'd want my Brooks to have the chance to accumulate some real age. Proofhide is my friend!)

Yours is not a "pre-aged" Brooks anyway, so don't worry about changing the color/patina of the top.

Lisa is right, your saddle is not pre-aged and it didn't come in ITS original box. It came in a different brooks saddle's original box. We've never purchased a pre-aged saddle.

Mimi, this is yet ANOTHER Brooks. I'm not taking mine off my road bike. This is one I bought a couple of weeks ago for my mixte.

honey Champion Flyer with copper rivets. Got it used too.

Pre aged leather is almost like Suede. Almost. And proofhide will ruin it...but I'm with Knot.

They are supposed to be already "pre-softened." If you go to the wallbike site again, you can see what it looks like. If its honey, it's not pre-aged.
