    Hilly Hundred - Day 2

    To disable ads, please log-in.

First, let me say that TE's trekjeni is a GEM! Funny, Smart, Athletic...and with great friends too! Her BF is a lucky guy!

    Another strong day!
    A little warmer,
I averaged 16.1 (thanks in large part to Jeni's friend Scott doing some serious pulling! At one point, for five miles, he was pulling a 20 person pace line at about 25mphand doing awesome!
I climbed the dreaded Mt. Tabor and Bean Blossom despite loosing my chain at the bottom of both
We had a 10mph wind from the south for about 5-8 miles...and this had its toll.

I had some serious chain problems - my chain jammed - and locked up - three times at inopertune times (like the foot of dreaded Mt. Tabor), but I never had to walk my bike! Turns out that my small chain ring is BENT and out of line!

Here's Jeni (right) and friends Scott and Carrie at B'fast - Day 2:

Here's the five of us at the Start Line:

Well, Jeni and Scott really brought Silver out of her healthy eating shell!

Our four, plus another FoJ (Friend of Jeni) that we picked up along the way!

Going home...now how many bikes can you get on a Saab?

How fun!! You must be very proud of your milestone that you shared with your lovely wife. You and Silver make a handsome couple. Congratulations on your accomplishment and you are quite an inspiration for those who struggle along in their training.

You know CC, I personally wondered the same thing...but at least they didn't have TIM TAMS! Althought they had FRIED CHICKEN too...but I was good and didn't have any!

Seriously, they had plenty of veggies too...it's just that trekjeni made silver be a bad girl!

Regarding this ride...the organizers would be the first to point out that it's a tour and not a race. For me, it wouldn't have been fun if I didn't push hard, but I'd say that for most of the 5,000 participants, this is their only long ride of the year and that they're doing it for fun and socialization.

The SAGs were a blast! People EVERYWHERE! Lots of Bluegrass Music ( I never thought I'd hear "Salty Dog" played live )

Here's another shot showing the crowd at the lunch SAG:

    Question SAGs

Please what's a SAG? As an ignoramus I've never heard of it/them!

    Sag Wagon
A car or truck that picks up or otherwise assists riders who have had to stop riding, either due to fatigue, injury, or mechanical failure. This is primarily a touring term, racers call the corresponding vehicle the "broom wagon."
Some people believe that the term derives from the verb "sag", others maintain that it is an acronym for "Support And Gear."

We have lazily adopted the term to include the rest stops that are provided along the way.

Nice pix, Silvers. Looks like it was a great ride. BTW, do you always wear matching jerseys, or do you just save them for "special occasions"??

CC - don't think we eat only junk on big rides! Although many rides have their expected "treats" at certain stops - cookies, or - on a few rides I've been on, pie and ice cream is a favored treat - most rest stops feed you more healthful fair such as bagels, bananas, apple slices (a recent ride I did had big slices of peaches! Oh, what a treat that was!), granola bars, peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat, and GORP (good old raisins and peanuts). However, gnoshing on a bagel or a banana usual doesn't merit a picture, as it's much more pedestrian that a big ol' fun cookie!

No we don't always wear matching jerseys. We did only have these two sets. Now we have the matching Hilly jerseys. On big group rides, I think that having the matching jerseys indicates that we are riding together.

People will say, "Oh is that your husband back there?" Or "I saw the other Alabama jersey at the rest stop." Or maybe they will accomodate us better by not cutting one of us off and helping us pull back together.

I wear my jerseys that match his all the time, but I notice that he only wears his when I ask. He seems to prefer solid color jerseys.

Agreed! They do have healthy foods. apples, bananas, oranges, veggies, bagels, etc. but not good photo opps. I do usually eat very healthy. And I usually eat my own food, but I do like to splurge on ice cream and cookies on big rides where top performance is not required.

TrekJeni here to weigh in on the weekend!

There was no coaxing of Silver, she was a willing partcipant to the worshipping of "All that is not good for you!"

I wish I had my camera out but at the end of Day 2, many people witnessed Silver take two Pringles and stick them in her mouth to look like a duck before wolfing them down (I don't think she even chewed )

More later when I have a chance, trying to catch up on some work here in the lab.

Silver and Mr. Silver ROCK. This was the best Hilly yet.

Mary - we saw your picture on the big screen during the safety talk Friday night.

My, she sounds so "academic" particularly for a woman who wore her pringles like a duck's bill

Sure sounds like it, her name is Amanda. Jeni knew her from racing. Think she said Amanda's a Cat3?
