The bike club sponsors a two day bicycle trip from Louisville to Mammoth Cave and back. I drove some friend's car down to Mammoth Cave yesterday and rode back with the club today. What an amazing trip. We left Mammoth Cave around 8 a.m. - dang it was cold! We took the ferry across the Green River and started a very long climb out of the park. We passed through the towns of Cub Run, Bonnievill, Magnolia, White City before having lunch in New Haven (60 mile mark). By lunch it had warmed up and the skies were a beautiful blue with lots of sunshine along the way. We then made our way to Nerix, Bardstown, Mt. Washington before heading to Louisville. As the day progressed I became stronger with each stroke of my pedals and found myself up front with the fast group. By the time we hit the 100 mile mark on this incredible journey my legs were tired and each new hill presented a real challenge. It was at this point I started counting down the remaining miles and giving myself a pep talk. By the time we reached our cars I had logged 128.17 miles and averaged 17.02 mph for the day. I'm exhausted but floating on cloud nine for I've never gone this far before. I had a great time and hope to repeat this trip next year when it pops up on the club schedule.
