Tandem tires???

BF and I are looking to resurrect the 25 year old Santana tandem occupying my parents' basement. Last time we visited, we pulled it out into the sunshine, cleaned off a lot of dust and cobwebs, and discovered what looks like a really nice bike.

Here's the question- tires/tubes clearly need to be replaced. It has 27 inch wheels- thereby limiting the options. Do tandems need special tires? (Do they need to be stronger given the extra weight etc?) Or will any tire that fits be okay?

i suggest you get the best tires you can find for that size.
the increased weight makes it most imperative.
