Tri-Suit vs Looking Like a Poseur

    To disable ads, please log-in.

So my first tri isn't until August, but I've been poking around online (here and elsewhere) at all the cute tri-clothes. I'm also not planning on wearing a wetsuit because it's a sprint and the lake is already at 75 degrees and it's only June. I was told that for a short race in warm enough water, most people forego the wetsuit. Plus, then I can save myself the rental fee. So I was also told that if you're not wearing a wetsuit, then a 1-piece trisuit is better, so that the top doesn't ride up while I'm swimming. But would I look like a TOTAL poseur, if I wore a 1-piece, or for that matter, if I even got a really cute outfit? Or should I just stick to plain black shorts and a plain colored top so as not to stand out as a stupid newbie? I always read about cyclists making fun of newbie cyclists who have all the gear but can't ride the bike - not on this board, but elsewhere.

I wore one at my last race. Everyone had them on. Poser...who cares....comfy more important.

I just did my first tri last weekend.
I wore tri shorts and a sports bra for the swim and bike (we did wear wetsuits) then pulled a top over for the run

The gal who did her first one w/ me had a one piece tri suit.

My vote - go for the tri suit.
It will help you transition quicker

Just be sure to get a race belt for your number - that is what she didn't have and didn't want the number pinned on for the swim and bike portion or to take the time to pin it before the run. Luckily someone had a spare she could use

It's about the journey and being in the moment, not about the destination

We had a pretty good thread going on this a week or so ago...

I prefer two pieces, cause I'm too long and bony to wear a one piece. And the bathroom thing.

There's nothing wrong with wearing a Cute tri outfit on your first race. If you are there and doing it, you are not a poseur. There's also nothing wrong with black short and solid top.

I will say that the only person around my area that wears the bikini type tri suit is the girl that WINS the race. So maybe not one of those just yet.

Well, I am short-waisted, so a one-piece wouldn't be weird on me, most likely. And it's a sprint, so I doubt I'll be stopping to pee at any point. We'll see though. There are a couple of triathlon stores around here where I can go and try stuff on.

I vote for the tri-suit. Like someone else said, you're not a poseur if you're out there swinging the bat. One peice tri-suits greatly decrease transition issues but definitely get a number belt, as already suggested, or use a piece of elastic (the kind you use in sewing) to make a belt by tying the number to it. then you just have to pull the number on over your legs, elastic is around the waist and away you go.

Have a great race and tell us all about how you do!!

Yes, I plan to get a race belt - quicker to attach while I start running than trying to pin it on. Worth the $8.

Yes, yes, I have more questions. Let's move on to brand: who knows about Orca and Pro Killa?
I like the Orca style and the prices on closeouts are not bad, but I want to know about how they fit long torso'd people. Does anyone know of a tri store in the Nashville area?
    I enjoy it all.
