My First Wipe Out!

Yesterday was a bad day!

I got ill at work, but was feeling better but still puny late in the day.

So, I decided to take an easy ride to get over it.

About 6 miles in, I hit a 3 inch high pile of sand on a curve and wiped out at 20mph. Wonderful road rash on the left side. I'm glad no one was around, because I looked like a beached whale trying to unclip my right pedal

So, today was a fun day wearing a wool suit and socks over road rash from my ankle to my hip! But the LBS got me fixed back up, so maybe I can ride again tomorrow.

On the bright side, I now know what you do when you fall in the middle of nowhere and you're standing there bleeding like crazy...you get back on your bike and ride home!

Keep it moist. Tegraderm, or Spenco 2nd Skin bandages are the only way to go. Silvadene cream if you happen to have it is good too with the bandages. If you have nothing on hand, even covering the wounds with plastic wrap and adhesive or even duct tape will help. The thought of clothes touching road rash makes me cringe. Don't do it.

Thanks Martha...I needed that but was afraid to ask.

Funny story. I went last night to buy special pads to cover the wounds...but I didn't use tape. Lower leg pads were held in place my knee high dress socks hoping that pants would hold thigh and hip pads in place.

I was wrong as my "upper pads" migrated south and were deposited on the floor. I was a walking biohazard!

I was uncertain about the "keep it moist" or "keep it dry" options, so now I know.

I'm allergic to neosporin, so I have to be careful with those kinds of remedies.

Took red benz to mechanic tonight. So, tomorrow, I have to drive Lexus to the office. Have someone drive me to pick up Benz at the mechanic. Take Benz to home #2. Ride bike back to office, and take the Lexus home with bike on rack.

I can't make it work without the bike!

Isn't it neat how my bike enables me to get two cars home?

20 mph was my top speed today and I'm pretty sure it wasn't going through a curve, that speed was probably about 5 mph

I can relate (all too well, as you know)! I too am allergic to neosporin (well, actually the neomycin in the neosporin) - are you allergic to mango as well (the oil in the skin of the mango produces the same rash that the neomycin does)?

Take care, and when the scabs start to itch (which, they will in a few days), resist the urge to scratch! Here's to a speedy recovery.

Your car / bike shuffling plan sounds like the old riddle about three missionaries and three cannibals on the bank of a river that they wish to cross. There is a boat available which can ferry up to two people across. The goal is to find a schedule for ferrying all the cannibals and all the missionaries safely across the river. But if at any point the cannibals outnumber the missionaries on either bank, the cannibals will eat the missionaries. Note that the boat cannot cross the river by itself with no people on board.

Owie! I fear my first wipe out. The only two real wipe out stories I'm familiar with were both doosies involving broken bones and surgery. But I don't want road rash either!

I can relate to the beached whale feeling, however. When DH and I started riding our tandem, we had a communication issue as we went from a stop to taking off up a hill, DH not clipped in yet. We barely started going when we lost our balance on a very busy street. It was a slow motion thing as the bike slowly leaned over to the side with me clipped in and hubs trying with all his might to keep it upright with one foot clipped in and one on the ground. I couldn't get my foot out of the clip (being a newbie!) and ended up doing the beached whale thing on my side with cars buzzing by. I'm just SURE they were pointing and laughing and making great mockery of me! This did not go over well with my husband trying to convince me what a great thing it is to tandem! But, alas, I've come to love it.

FBG: Yes, I did start shaving my legs a couple months ago and during the clean-up (and now with tape in my future), I'm glad I did. I have been a bit self-conscious of the shaving, but now I have a new perspective
