the avatar? You must have the picture hosted on a server (web site ) somewhere, and then you type in the URL for location. Also, there are size limitations.
all the avatar information is in the edit options of your use profile

How do you guys upload the pictures that show next to your user name? I've looked through eveything and can't find out.

Go to the FAQ (frequently asked questions) and read "How do I get a picture under my username?" That tells you about the avatars. You have to have more than 10 posts to have your own custom avatar.
