Usually sending the products is not a problem from the American side. When you send a product, you have to fill out a customs form, same as if you were to bring something across in person. On that form you have to indicate what is in the package and it's worth.
When your Canadian recipient gets the package they will receive billing from Canada Customs either at the same time or shortly thereafter, to pay the duty on the item.
So, the cheaper you list the value on the customs forms, the less they have to pay. Also certain items are considered duty free, like used clothing. That's how my American family memebers used to always describe the things they sent me so I wouldn't pay duty. Mind you, they were always sending clothing.
