    first commute of the year

In direct contrast to "First ride of the year" this is a story of wimpyness.

My DH talked me into riding to work as he offered to accompany me.
I agreed even knowing it would still be quite dark out. I have a little headlight on my bike and one on my helmet too, but he has a schmidt hub generator which really lights up the lamp he has mounted on his amazingmobile bike. WHile he was riding right next to or directly in front of me, I could see pretty well, but if he got ahead (which is easy to do) I could no long see well enough to be comfortable and slowed down (which meant we drew further apart).
When we were almost to my office, I missed a curb cut and went down the curb but I saw it right before it happened so it wasn't too bad.
Going home was another story. The clouds were so low and fat that you could practically touch them, not a ray of sun anywhere, and it was still pretty cold.
I left the office just as the cute 30 something coworker called out, Wait, Mimi, we can go together! So, amazingly I was escorted almost all the way home too.
He's a strong rider (like DH) but he said "you lead, I'll follow you" until we got to the hills where he took off ahead, but not leaving me behind. Since I am such a wimp that I was worried about this ride, it was cool that I had a riding buddy both ways.

Observations: Cars give you more space when you're more than one bike.
I CAN go faster going home (when my pride is at stake)

That's not a whimpy story at all. I admire everyone that commutes. It takes a lot of commitment and courage. So, do you get to ride home with the cute 30-something guy everyday? That would be something to look forward to

unfortunately, no, because he doesn't go home the same time every day like i do. However, it is bound to happen again. and he said i didn't slow him down, he got home just as fast as he always does.

Get one of them lights. I just did and luv luv luv it.

(Cars give you more space if you have more light, too.)

I think the cute 30-something was enjoying the view when hanging out behind you.

    Enjoy the commute!

Hey, that's great you toughed it out. I'm getting really nervous about trying to commute.

Sorry grog, I'm old enough to be his mother. (Think of it!) EEEK!
Besides, it was 45 degrees out; there wasn't much to see.

I had a colleague once (we were both in our low 20s) who was seriously attracted to the legs of the rector of our institution (who was a woman). She indeed had amazing legs... especially for a 62 year-old woman!!! He kept thinking it wasn't right to be so fond of a 62-yo woman's legs like that, but he couldn't stop looking, either!!!

It was just to make you smile. One has to take the little pleasures where they are!!

Good for you. I wish I had a cute 30 something to ride with. Don't care if I am old enough to be his mother, I'm not dead and can still look.
Although I feel like I know I am getting older because now I think of some of these young guys as very handsome, my mind never wonders any further than that. LOL

Maybe that is a sign of being happily married for so long instead of a sign of getting old.

You should be very proud Mimi for toughing it out and just doing it. Way to GO!!!
    Donna
