My rant for today- Being sick!

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I think MANY of you can join in with this rant for today.

What is up with everyone being sick? And then those sick people pass their germs to the healthy ones... making them sick.

Being sick by itself sucks. It sucks even more because it cuts into training time! I already had to take Feb 8th to Feb 12th off because of a cold.

And now today... my throat is sore and I feel drained. DANG IT! I can't get sick for a 2nd time in one month. Can I?

Here's how I see it... everyday I miss a training session is one step further away from doing an IM in 08. I can't keep missing weeks at a time. I have to get my running base up for my Olympic distance in May and I can't do that if I keep getting sick.

I am crossing my fingers and toes that I won't get a full on cold this time. I am going to try to run tonight as planned. If I need to miss a workout, then I can cut into my swim yardage without doing too much damage to my training.

I have been teaching high school for 19 years. And in those 19 years, I can count on one hand the times I have been sick. I have been sick three times since Sept.

Now the first thing that would spring to mind is...Oh but you are training harder this year. Actually I checked my training logs for prior years and I am really not training much harder.

I asked the doc when I was there last week, and she said that the kids came back sick in Sept and have been sick ever since. There has not been a break this year.

So I feel your pain...this was a bad one this time too. Fever, head, throat, chest.

It started with a sore throat so be careful.
Lots of bad bugs out there.

KSH: Hang in there. Even if you get sick again, you will be able to do your IM in 2008! We all have to adjust our training because of sickness, or work life getting in the way, or whatever. If you are feeling sick, rest as much as possible, get over it as well as you can and then hit your training again. We all get caught up in our training schedules, but you have to go with the flow when you have to, i.e. when you get sick. Use this as good rest time and you will come back stronger than before.

Here to hoping that you are not coming down with another cold! But you will be fine and your goals are still achievable.

Sorry you're sick again, KSH! Sheesh- that wind blowing 80 mph sure doesn't help any. I think all sick people should be quarantined (ok- not really, but keep your germs to yourself already).

I, too, teach and I've been really sick this year. I've used all 10 of my sick days (ridiculous, I know) and I just had to use #11 last week. Just plain silly. I've probably stayed home a couple times when I could've gone and toughed it out, but it's just so hard to be "on" and entertaining when you feel like crap. I've only been teaching 10 years, but I was really sick my first year, and now my 10th. Makes sense what you were saying RNRGirl. Those crazy kids and their crazy germs...

KSH- rest up. Don't stress too much about missing training. I learned a few weeks ago that if you push it when your body's not really ready, you'll only be sick for longer.

    Take care, ladies...

I wonder what makes it such a bad year. I am a Bio teacher, and I will be dipped if I can figure out any biological reason.

It is stinky, that is for sure.

Everyone around me at work has been sick on and off for months. Sneezing, coughing, hacking. I'm a bit of a germaphobe and cringe every time I hear another cough. I'm washing my hands even more than ever.

So far, I've been lucky and well. Not even a leetle cold. KNOCK WOOD.

    Get well, all!

Yikes - sounds like the nasty bugs are everywhere. My three kids were off school for a week with a nasty chest thing and a high fever. Once they were better and back at school I just kept thinking please dont let me get it now I need to ride after a week locked into the house of sick. Luckily I didn't get it but most of the school seemed to with teachers and kids out for weeks on end.

I hope you will be feeling better soon. Frustrating as it is make sure you get plenty of rest.

I'm sick too. This is the first time in awhile for me. One of my client's came in with a nasty flu last week. I guess I wasn't able to dodge it. Explains my wacky HR this weekend. So I'm at home, in bed cruising TE. No training for me.

Well... I went to get my run on.

But I didn't have socks. So I ran without. HUGE MISTAKE!

I now have 2 blisters on my arches... and it hurts to stand and walk. DUH!

On the upside... I might be fighting this cold off!

I had the worst stomach flu of my life in January. And, I work with kids, too, and they are just sick, sick, sick this year.

Saturday last was supposed to be my long ride day, and I just felt awful. Not sick, just tired. Really tired. I procrastinated all day, trying to talk myself into riding. Finally, I just went to bed and napped HARD. Then I slept 10 hard hours that night.

It through my schedule off, but I got in a great ride on Sunday (yesterday), and felt wonderful. I just needed the rest on Saturday. Rest, rest, rest if you have to.

I know what you are going through. Getting sick sucks, but stressing over the lost training is self defeating. Better to just count this as soft training week and then pick it up again when you are feeling better.
I'd rather be swimming...biking...running...and eating cheesecake...

I hear ya ladies. And honestly, it sounds like a few of you got it a lot worse than I am getting it.

This year has been the worst for horrible bugs going around!

Well, I have a really sore and scratchy throat... sneezing and my body has been achy. I am skipping swimming tonight with the hope that I can hit my spin class on Wed. and run Thurs.

If I have to skip workouts though, the spin class and swimming with go... so I can run and ride this weekend.

Now, I just hope my blisters are gone so I can run.

Does anyone use Airborne or Zicam? I swear by Airborne, DH likes the Zicam. Both are with the cold medicines in the store. Everytime I feel the slightest bit off, like I might be fighting something, I take a couple of those and I'm fine. I also take some if people at work are sick, and everytime I travel.

I hope everyone gets better soon!
The best part about going up hills is riding back down!
