    headphones?

I was just on the trainer in the cold dark basement :|. The princess was using my laptop so I couldn't watch any movies or tv or anything. My laptop is networked into the recorded TV, one of the perks of being married to major computer geek.

Looking for something to help pass the time, I popped on my headphones and dialed up my regular cardio playlist that I use when I'm on the eliptical or some such thing. I have never done this before b/c I'm usually using a Spinervals dvd or watching something.

It was great! I think I sweat more than during my spinervals workouts, the time whizzed by and I realized I should do it more often.

Anyway, to the point of this thread. I never use headphones while riding. I've seen this thread on other forums and there seems to be a split of opinions. I admit I've tried it on some quiet mornings thinking all would be well but ended up ditching them after just a few miles because I was afraid I couldn't hear anything but the music.

The thing is, I see a LOT of roadies wearing ipods. There is a community college about a half mile from my house and it is a very popular starting spot for cyclists. They leave the campus and head towards the water passing right along my street. On weekends, I'll see 25 - 30 cyclists a day and I have to say many, many of them have headphones on.

    Thoughts? Comments? Experiences?

    Hi there

Glad it works for you on the trainer, but regarding the road... this topic has been beaten to death on this forum as well as on others. The opinions are not different: some are for, others are strongly against.

Just make a search for headphone/earphone...

Great if you do, but next time you do a Spinervals session crank up the resistance or use higher gears or get a harder Spinverals tape. I suspect the higher sweating this time was just the planets aligning this one time for lots of sweat and would not be a consistent expectation.

And, don't get me started on headphones. Unknown jerk rider (now known as PodBoy) cut in behind me on our long high speed descending paceline Satuday. We were already hearing-challenged due to the wind. I couldn't see around his girth and he couldn't hear the line telling him that they'd dropped. So I blew up the line because he committed multiple infractions of group riding etiquette, one of which was the earphones. I've said enough now . . . .

    What happens when that happens?

I mean, when somebody dangerously breeches group riding etiquette, do they get cussed at, chewed out, kicked out or do people just grit their teeth and endure?

I always listen to my mp3 player on the stationary or trainer when I'm able to do it. I don't listen to anything but the wind and road noises outdoors, but indoors I get a great workout.
Don't think of it as getting hot flashes. Think of it as your inner child playing with matches

When I finally figured out what happened I just pulled off and let him pass. I mean, he couldn't hear me anyway. What he did wasn't dangerous just rude. I personally don't draft anyone I don't know since I don't know how safe it will be and I certainly don't cut into the middle of a line without asking. There was a very small gap at the time, but it was obvious we were riding as a group due to the lack of variety in the jerseys (3 different ones for only 8 people and all women but one).

In other circumstances, I'll try to give him a little polite education. When you're wearing earphones, all bets are off. At least I don't yank the earphones off anyone. I know someone who does that to anyone attempting to ride in a pack and wear phones at the same time.

I know the group I ride with does NOT allow headphones because we have a rotating paceline and ride in major traffic. Personally, when Im on the path alone in the early morning, its ok to me as long as the volume isnt too loud to where I couldnt here anything and Im riding it safe. But, when I get on the road, the headphones come off and get put away, so I can use all of my senses to keep from getting hit and help me get where I need to go. Also, it's illegal where Im at to wear headphones while riding a bicycle on the road, so there's extra incentive not to wear them while on the road.

Kitsune, last time I tried that I got chewed out royally. And half of the posts on this thread are about paceline etiquette.
