    International phone cards

Is there such a thing? I'm sure I can't get them in Belle, MO...my son just left for a 6 month tour of Europe on the USS Eisenhower. He's hitting Italy first, and Greece, and I want to hear from him when he hits land! Are there any kinds of phone cards I can send him? Maybe if I send them, he will be guilted into contact...lol. Gee, I never had to think beyond the US before. This is a whole new area for me. Thanks in advance! You guys always come through.

Yes. My DH used to buy them before he would go to European conferences. Now he uses his cell phone.

Justin had his cell phone shut off for the tour. Didn't know he could use it, and I don't think it works on that ship anyway. Can you tell me where, what kind of cards he got? I don't even know where to go! Small town ya know! I guess I've sort of lived in a bubble...

Before moving here we lived in a very small town in the middle of nowhere. Of all places True Value Hardwear sold the phone cards. We also had one major shopping center, it was Wal-mart. Anyway, those were the only two major places to shop in town and that is where he would pick them up.

If you look at phone cards, some will specifically say "International". Make certain you look carefully, a costly lesson for me.

    Hey uforgot.

Since your son is on a navy ship, the only way you can contact him is by satellite phone... and those are really expensive. I think 7 bucks a minute?

I looked at those cards. Is there any particular one you use? I noticed that some have maintenance fees, don't want that. Also, can these be used in multiple countries? He isn't spending much time in each one.

    Thanks for the help.

I use the cardinal i believe. i don't like maintenance fees, and yes you can use them for all the countries listed.

I had to buy a separate one for cellphone destinations in Italy which are SO expensive for some reason.

I call my mom to Ukraine all the time using the AT&T calling card thta I bought at Sam's Club or Costco. But you cannot send this one to yur son. However, any European country will have their own cards that he can buy and use. They are inexpensive.

There is a new service http://www.jajah.com/ which does not require computers and will connect you directly to the phone. There is no charge at all or negligible if you are calling to a cell phone.
