Bikes
Looking for new bike. Want a road/sport/tour bike. Don't want to load up, but enjoy taking organized trips. Have been riding a mountain bike, but it's a lot of work on 60 mile days. Can't seem to find a road bike with gears low enough. I live in a very hilly area and need them. Any suggestions?

The new bike I have sounds like what you are looking for. It is a Casati City bike with racing tires. You can put knobby tires on it if going off pavement.
It is only 21.7 lbs. Climbs like a dream! It is a hand-made Italian bike. Started out with the frame and fork, then customized it. There was no getting used to it. The first time I took it out I could not believe it, it was like the bike was a part of me! It was fairly expensive, but it is a lifetime investment, this bike will last me forever. |

I'm also looking for a good road bike in Canada. Vancouver to be exact. Is there anyone on here from Canada and know what kind I should be looking for?? I bought myself a new Mountain Bike this summer. I went for the Norco Buzz and I just love it!! Best money I ever spent. Now I'm looking to get a road bike. The Buzz is just too heavy for the road. Any suggestions out there??

Try giantbicycle.com and look at their Recreational Road Bikes. Giant is a great value in a bike and they make a small size frame. I just got one, and I love it. I was riding a mountin bike but wanted to go on club rides and longer rides. I will be riding my first century, The Seagull Century in MD this October.

possibly swapping cassettes
Chrys, have you talked to your shop about possibly swapping cassettes to give you some larger gears? The Shimano 105 grupo comes as large as a 28 tooth. Some of the newer Campy stuff will go up to a 29. Or you could go to a triple ring in front. If you change the stuff when you first buy the bike it's cheaper than doing it later. (Learned that one the hard way.)
As for bike suggestions, I'm partial to steel. I've been riding a Bianchi bike for 6 years and love it. A good friend of mine just bought a Jamis. It's also a very nice bike, with decent parts, for not a whole lot of money. |

try a mountain cassette?
If you are willing to get a new mountain bike rear derailleur, you can even put a mountain bike cassette on a road bike for extra-wide gearing.

i recommend looking @ the Specialized Expedition. it has a hybrid tire and straight handlebars witha suspension seatpost. very comfortable.

Dear Chrys-
I have a hybrid and a road bike. My road bike is a Bianchi Imola weighing in at just over 20 lbs. It is steel with Shimano components and a triple chain ring. The fork is carbon and the steerer is threadless. It is a thing of beauty both to look at and to ride. And it is FAST... I'm medium boned and about 5feet 4 and one half inches and the 53 cm frame fits me just fine. I'm from Upstate New York, too. It seems like the bike was made for the roads here. Lynn |
