my thoughts are with you too, BikeGoddess

my 13 year old has just recovered from a fractured shoulder and is back on the bike, so my thoughts are exactly where they should be in terms of sending healing vibes for arm bones

I just talked to BG on the phone.

She's spunky as ever but having trouble keeping food down. She can't type but told me to tell everyone how much she appreciates all the support and well wishes. She's also aware of the bikejournal thread.

She broke her femur and will be in a cast for approximately three weeks, then she'll start physical therapy.

She was on the Jamus, not the Scott, so her steel bike held up well to the crash. They cut the remainder of her bike clothes so she was happy to save her favorite bike jacket!
    Cheers!

Hmmm....les'see if I remember from anthro class: the elbow (unless you're very young and the bones haven't fused) is actually part of the ulna bone, which is one of the forearm bones. The other forearm bone is the radius. The upper arm bone is the humerus (nothin' funny about it tho').

Speaking of breaking bones, interesting timing that my oldest son's friend two doors down recently broke his forearm while riding his scooter (ate it right in front of me)...I think his break was to the radius (haven't seen the x-rays, so don't know for sure). I got to play nurse by splinting it and driving him and his older sister to the hospital, as his parents weren't home. The whole incident peaked my son's interest in anatomy, so we've been poring over our recent Barnes & Noble purchase on human anatomy. Interesting stuff.

Hey BG, what color cast did you get...huh?? Huh?? (imitating my 5-yr-old quizzing the neighbor).....

Again -- whatever bone you broke, hope you heal quick!!

Lots of healing needed. If you are doing PT, ask for some exercises for your shoulder as well. 3 months after my radial head fracture I got adhesive capsulitis in that shoulder. Flexibility is good. Heal well.

She's probably on some major pain meds. That upset my stomach and caused me to say all sorts of goofy things. I'm sure that we'll get the whole story later.

I too, hope it's not her dominate arm. I broke my right arm (the ulna and I'm right handed) and it's a real problem.

I had a blue cast, btw.

Oh, that brings up another thing that she'll need...a sharpie for signing her cast! I had a silver sharpie

Tell her to try applesauce -- at least if you "lose" it, it comes up easily and doesn't taste bad, believe it or not.

Poor thing -- healing vibes and prayers on the way.

I'm obviously confused. It was definitely in the arm region....

    Alternate bike?

Hope you heal quickly - When your legs need a ride but you still can't lean on your arm, maybe see if you can borrow a recumbent? If you were here in Portland, I'd let you use my extra one. Let me know if that sounds like something you might want to try, and I'll see if someone local to you has a loaner. I'm not trying to convert you just an option to keep you riding.
