Hey, BMO3, my best friend has a mother much like this. My friend is one of the smartest, wisest, funniest, most compassionate, grown-up people I know. There is something really missing from her mother, who is just awful and always has been. I think I said before in TD that good people don't always get the parents they deserve. It still surprises her too after all this time. Every great once in a while she has a session or two with a great therapist she's known for years just to get refreshers in how to defend her heart and gut against a mother who's a narcissistic, mean, sociopath. So know you are not alone. It's not fair and you don't deserve it. But you are in excellent company--there are other wonderful women out there who have to try to deal with this. She did it by making her own little family--wonderful husband and son--into the happiest, sanest, and best little group, and by surrounding herself with good friends.
"My predominant feeling is one of gratitude. I have loved and been loved;I have been given much and I have given something in return...Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and an adventure." Your mom is an idiot Bmo3. Who would want to have a stroke? Geez...

Enjoy your day with your family.

BMo3- I hear you... loud and clear. My mom's pretty similar in those respects... don't let it get you down. We all know better, and if that's the path of thinking that she insists on taking, then there's little we can do but know how wrong it is and keep our chins up. (And she wonders why I moved 2000 miles away as soon as I was 18?) Hang in there, we're pullin' for ya.

(BTW... i'm with Knot, just... incase your mom is right. The ladies aren't going anywhere, but if I could get my heart to keep a decent rhythm and all my joints not not be so crackly and noisy, I'd be thrilled. ...and well... for future use on the ladies just in case an A can actually be affected by gravity. )

This is the woman who wonders why I never visit her. Go figure. She is abusive, not so much physically anymore, just mentally, and completely narcissistic. Gee, why on earth would I want to keep myself and my children away from her? It really sucks not having a the support of a parent. Parents are supposed to love their children unconditionally, apparently she never received that memo. Why, after 37 years, do I keep getting surprised by her behaviour?
Whew, I feel somewhat better venting. Thanks to anyone who read this.
Oh my god - is your mother my mother by any chance??? Hugs to you. But seriously, that is somthing my mother would do - and the whole emotionally abusive narcissism thing. Wow. For example, her drug OD during my second year of law school being one of her cries for attention. Oh, and the irrational and scary screaming fit at me in a restaurant in front of my fiance and a dear friend of hers right before my wedding. We're getting along a lot better now, but she lives on the other side of the continent and is better medicated.

You know this, but remember, this is NOT her problem. This is YOUR body and YOUR legitimate medical issue which YOU did not create. Go hug your boys. Part of the struggle with a parent like that is not passing it down the line. It sounds like you are a fantastic mom and you have been through a lot. Seriously, go hug your boys and take them outside to play and don't think about your mom if you can help it.

bmo3 - I used to have a friend like that; "used to" being the operative word. Too bad it's not as easy to jettison family. ((big hug))

Anchorage! cwr - I like Anchorage; hell, I love Alaska. There was a deli on 4th street I think, that I'd go to. I wonder if it's still there, this was a million years ago.

Oh! I forgot! Dad's birthday dinner was a huge success - the family actually stayed at the dinner table well into the night, chatting, laughing. I'm a happy hostess.

((BMo3)) You might not get hugs, virtual or otherwise from your Mom, but you can get them here! And from your boys.

Knotted - I gotta ask, maybe I missed it somewhere, but how did you come up with the "Flossie" for your bike? I can't help it, I think of teeth every time I read that name. Sorry!

kit - Give 'em time- even A's can lose that certain perkiness that we'd like to keep forever!

How'd it all go, Lise? The date and the 1/2? Waiting to hear.

chickwhorips - enjoy your eating out!

I am lazy today. Should be out on my bike. It's BEAUTIFUL here, and here I sit in front of the comupter. Worked till 2:00 a.m. last night and just can't get myself jump started. Soon, I hope!

Back from 1/2 marathon followed by french toast. Going to soak my legs in cold water, and then crash. Will tell all later. L.

It might actually have been called the 4th Street Deli. It's been about 10 years since I was last there. I really need to plan another trip up!

Thank you everyone for listening to me vent and for the wonderful words of encouragement.

Here (hopefully) is a photo right before my son's birthday dinner.

BMo3- Please pass on a Happy Birthday to your son- BTW I like the T-shirt. I have a few like that. Can't go wrong with smart-aleck statements!

Annie- I'm going to pretend you didn't say that. I'm going to pretend I didn't read that, and go on with my day.

At work drinking a Rockstar Juiced. ...not b/c I'm tired, but because I'm so bored, being a little caffeine-jazzed won't hurt. It might even make me feel more productive. Ah!! *snerk*Hahahahahahahah*gasp!*HAAHAHAHaahahaha! Where's that ROFL icon again?

If anyone here likes techno/goth metal, my friend DJ Frequency (Symphony of Me) just came out with another set of tracks... I'm asking where I can d/l or buy a CD but in the mean time, they're playable here. Yes, I can be an outlet for my friend's shameless self-promotion, too.

I can only hope I age as gracefully as the "old hippies" I managed to spend a good chunk of my life with. They're beautiful women despite the fact they have easily 30 years on me. Maybe there's something to this 'glamour' thing after all.
