I would never fly down for a long weekend in San Diego to meet up with a bunch of guys from Road Bike Review..... (wonder if I can find a link to the pictures, it was great fun.....) Not to mention the great friends I've made with the N Cal ladies.

Caligurl is absolutely right - it is more than possible to meet others online.

And the world of touring is probably something that you haven't entered yet or you would not make this kind of assumption. I have met people here and on crazyguyonabike.com who I now consider to be friends. I have hosted touring cyclists who I met on crazyguyonabike at my home, I have offered a place to stay to touring cyclists I met on the road in my home area, and I have received and accepted offers of support from people I've met when I've been touring. While I usually prefer solo touring, I probably would have taken Dominic up on his offer to share a ride on his tandem if he had been passing through my area. Velogirl's ride report made her experience with him sound like a good one, and an opportunity not to be passed up.

I think you just completely changed my opinion of you, Cali Sunshine. Bummer -- I guess I was wrong about you.

Dom's definitely not a creep. He's a typical bike tourist. I've housed many of them over the years from the warm showers list and ridden with some of them as well. When I've toured alone, I welcomed the opportunity to meet folks and share experiences with them. There's nothing creepy about that at all. It's a way for us to expand our experiences beyond our own little existence.

    Thumbs up

Sounds like you had a great time. I remember seeing this post before and thinking how cool of a journey he must be in store for. Even better now I'm sure becuase he got to ride with a velogirl!

Can't wait to hear all about it this weekend as we play in the mud.

Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiement. The more experiments you make the better. What if they are a little coarse, and you may get your coat soiled or torn? What if you do fail, and get fairly rolled in the dirt once or twice? Up, again, you shall never be so afraid of a tumble.

I had also seen Dom's site previously before and WOW, THAT IS SO COOL Velogirl that you were able to meet up with him. Sounds like a great experience and one that I would be proud to be a part of if he were to make his way to Dallas. I will keep an eye on his site for pictures of your ride with him.

wow this is really neat. wish i was closer to ride with him for a bit.

now i know why our fuel prices went up, i found this picture http://www.blue-ant.tv/takeaseat/photo_1.php i hope that goes to the picture i'm talking about.

bummer, it doesn't take you to that photo i'm talking about. so i attached it and the comment next to the picture is this:
Dom thinks hes found a week point in the Alaska oil pipeline. Mass increases in oil price followed shortly after this picture was taken

I am happy to report that Denise, Tygab, Deb W., Plushride, Patti, SurlyGirl, Massbike, Wavedancer, and a couple of other people I have met through this forum are not creepy or weird.
While I might think twice about going off and riding with a strange man, I think you will find that most people who are involved with the world of bike touring are down to earth and very nice.
