SK, what a great story. Good music, too (your dad's, that is. As you say, they just kind of croak tunelessly--chk, chk, chk).
After my face-to-face with that Anna's, I did everything I could to keep them in the yard through the winter--got a bunch of winter-blooming hummingbird flowers, put up a feeder when the regular flowers start to fade and keep it up till spring. And I've had them winter over here for the last four years or so. Here's a picture of one from the living room window in the January Seattle bleah rain season. She sure brightened up THAT day.
