Roald Dahl, who wrote "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", also wrote some short stories for adults that are kind of twisted and delightful (see his collection "Someone Like You"),

I love Roald Dahl. I read Charlie and Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach to my class this year and then we watched the movies at the end of the year. I love Johnny too but he's pretty weird in the movie. I hated that I read about a connection between the way he played his character and Michael Jackson before I saw the movei. It kind of wrecked it for me...

I'm a big fan of J.D. myself. I like how Willie Wonka's internal screening mechanism is a couple of clicks off the norm. I thought the squirrel scene in the new movie was great.

Any other Napoleon Dynamite fans here on TD? I watched it just so I'd know what my friends were talking about, ended up buying it and watching it over and over again. We have a nurse at work who can do spot-on imitations of Kip and Napoleon.

I did not run this morning. After 2 hours of volleyball in a hot park district gym last night, I went and did the grocery shopping at 10PM. Not a bad time to shop--pretty quick. But I woke up this morning, heard the rain, and said, "no, not running". I've decided to count volleyball as a cross-training day, not a rest day. I don't play for the whole 2 hrs; sometimes I'm ref'ing. But it's a physical workout for probably an hour. I'm just starting to show the little signs of pushing too hard, physically.

For those keeping score at home, I have a date with Mr. Potential tonight. I remain in the "undecided" category on this one, which, I suppose, is why they call it dating.

Lise - Ooh! Good luck on the date tonight. I hope the sparks fly for you!

The last day I ran was Monday. My tubes came in Wednesday (have you noticed I didn't whine this time), but I've felt so lousy all week that I haven't felt like doing anything. Bad belly and sore throat! And - I leave for Canada on Monday! I'm putting the tube in this afternoon and riding tomorrow morning. Can't ride today - supposed to hit near 100F.

I think my freezer alarm is going off...crud.

Edit: nope - just an old fume hood. 10 people on that side of the building and no-one checks it. I am the farthest away and I am the one who checks it, turns off the alarm, and reports the malfunction. Go figure. SK - have any spare darts?

The PP can do spot on Napoelon imitations:

    "My lips hurt real bad!"
    "Tina eat your ham!"

She's got the voice down. It's a little creepy.

Lise - How long have you been dating again? (I'm sure I saw you said that somewhere.) I'm 46 as well and was separated and then divorced 2 years ago after 22 years of marriage. I was terrified of dating again after all those years... Luckily, I didn't end up having to. I don't know how you do it.

Loved the ending of the TDF this morning. No spoilers here though....

I am getting very frustrated with not having an opportunity to ride my bike. I want to ride EVERY day but having a kid home all summer is putting a stop to that. I can only impose on my mom and his two sisters once in awhile. Anyway, it looks like I might be able to go this afternoon for a couple of hours when Grandma gets home from golf. Of course, Erik just got a call from a buddy who he hasn't seen for ages and they want to go MTBiking today. I may end up having to go alone today I guess... Good thing is, Jesse goes to his dad's for the weekend and I can do two long rides this weekend.

I'm rambling now - the kid (he's 8) put me thru the ringer last night when he and his friend disappeared for about 3 1/2 hours. The left at about 5pm to go play in the bush just up the road. An hour later, I sarted watching for them to come home. 2 hours later, I started wondering worrying a bit, 2 1/2 hours later, dinner was going to be ready is 15 minutes so I sent Erik up on his bike to find them. No luck. We both got out on our bikes and starting searching - Erik headed up to the lake that's a mile away and I was knocking on doors. Finally, at 8:45pm, Erik found them happily playing in the sand pit about 1/2 mile from home, right where they said they'd be. Someone how he had missed them on his first trip through. Ugh, kids... I need to make him wear a watch and give him a specific time to come home....

I love Napoleon Dynamite. My favorite line is "Do the chickens have long talons?"

It's great to get the DVD and watch the wedding scene, and the filming of the wedding.

Lise, what are you doing on the date tonight? All that can be told, that is. Bike date? Movie date?

My first date with my husband, in fall of '85, was an all-dayer. Started with going out on his sailboat, which he was then living on while going to school, from about 11:00-2:00; then to a Cajun place for a late lunch; then we decided to drive two hours to Mt. Rainier to see fall colors; was pitch black by the time we got there; drove back to Seattle and had midnight dinner at Louie's Cuisine of China! We just couldn't quite convince ourselves to end the day...

Didn't meet him till I was 32, got married at 37, still think he's the coolest guy I know. So...never give up. Have fun tonight!

CC - I'm going to St. John, Newfoundland. I'll be there from Mon through Sun. I will make sure to get some of that coffee and whatever the other thing is. It's going to be a long trip - I don't enjoy being away from my kids and hubby for that long. Should be good, though and the hotel has an awesome spa/exercise facility. Pool and all. I'll at least be getting some good time to work out when the conference gets dull. Hey - do you want anything from there? I could pick something up for you...

Fish, hope you don't mind my asking, but what happened on the job front? OK if you don't want to talk about it.

Thanks for asking! No problem. I'm still waiting to hear something. Sometimes with the government things move slowly. I expected to get a call this week. I talked with the Area Director's assistant earlier this week and she hadn't heard anything yet. So - it sounds like the guy is sitting on the apps for a bit. This, of course, is driving me absolutely nuts! They'll probably call next week when I'm out of town. That would be my luck! And - this whole process will be slow even if I do get the call. I would have to go for an interview (give a job seminar) and then get offered the job. Then - it would take me about a month or 2 to wrap up my projects here and then I would move. I would love to get out of here before they defoliate the cotton. Aack! They need to make a Bill the Cat smiley.

She's not a wabbit, after all.

Fish - I hope you hear good news soon!

I just went for a run. Wow. That's a lot less fun than riding a bike, but not as bad as I remembered it from my marathon days. Although it turns out dogs aren't allowed on the trail parts of the Dipsea. Oh well. He sucks to run with, anyway. He's got that whole "I'm an unneutered male dog and I have to pee on EVERYTHING!!!" mentality.
