Where's Monteray Peninsula? Is this a meet, ride, go home deal or do I have to have a doggie-sitter?

    Do I wanna go?

Well, yeah I think I wanna go if it's not far away... how far a ride? Can the directionally impaired find it?

About 100 miles (give or take a few) south of Oakland. You could meet, ride and go home - might make for a long day.

I think the plan was for 50 flat miles.

I'd like to come along. I will have to check with my "socal director", but I'm pretty sure I can go. Sounds like fun, and maybe it won't be too hot there!

It is very unlikely that it will be too hot! I would guess that the temps should be mid 60's to low 70's.

This is an out and back route. Round trip is just under 50 miles. So if anybody wants to do a shorter ride, we can make arrangements. There's a good spot about 10 miles up the road. Starting and ending there would make a nice 30 mile loop.

It is flat flat. I rode an alternate course last weekend that had a little climbing. There was a short 15% grade, but the rest was pretty mild. But that course went inland. I prefer riding along the coast so I can watch the surf. Wind can be a factor.

I'll scour through the pages of this thread and get a list of riders and maybes for the ride.

I'd best wait for the next time... this calls for doggie care and it ain't in the budget (yet).

Crud. I don't think I'm going to make this one. Doggie care and snap care is over budget right now.

I think I can grab a room for Friday night at a Courtyard using my Marriott points. Choices are Morgan Hill, Cupertino, Campbell and So San Jose. What's the best for 1) driving into Monterey in the morning and 2) nice nieghborhood. Any of them near a Peet's? I'll even make do with a Starbuck's (you didn't hear me say that).

There is also a Courtyard in Salinas in an industrial area (by Orchard Supply Hardware, IHOP, Costco, grocery store, kind of places). I've had out-of-towner friends stay there before. About 2 or 3 years old. Pretty standard for a Courtyard. There's also a Residence Inn next door.

There are not Peet's around here. It doesn't bother my caffeine free body, but by caffeine addicted husband would be happier if they existed. There's a brand "S" a couple blocks away.

I can squeak out 1 night at the Residence Inn in Salinas - on El Rancho Way. Is that the one? It takes twice the points as Morgan Hill.

Having just spent a week with their coffee, even brand "S" looks good.

aka_kim and I are in negotiations right now. Her great decider powers have left her. The question is: do we drive down Friday night and then I try to stagger home after (estimate of 3 hours each way for me) or do I get up at the crack 'o dawn stupid and we make the drive that morning, stay the night so we can enjoy some post ride food and libation, and drive home the next day.

What time does the ride start this year?

Last year we started at 10:00. It's not the kind of ride that you have to start really early to beat the heat. (Now after saying that, watch it be screamin' hot). My vote would be to drive down early in the morning on Saturday, then spend Saturday night. Remember this is a FUN ride. You won't be killing yourself! But if you go the other way, libations could be had on Friday night!

It would have been nice to maybe go mountain biking on Sunday, but my work plans have screwed that up. I have to be on a plane Sunday at noon.

How can the Residence Inn be that expensive (in either points or dollars)? Wotta ripoff!

Okey-dokey. Kim and I have a reservation at the fabulously wonderful Residence Inn in Salinas for Saturday night. This will allow us to partake of the gourmet fare and libations of Salinas that night.

Hopefully, you're starting this ride late enough we can drive down in the morning. 172 miles from Davis + time to pick up Kim = a.m.

    AG, you are soooo special.

Uuhhhhhh.....I reeeeally hate to have to say this, but I now have a conflict on the 29th. Eek, darn, and yippee, all in the same sentence.....

Vino, a.k.a. Charlotte, is getting married in Mammoth on the 29th and has invited her and her soon-to-be hubby's close circle of cycling friends (which includes moi -- truly an honor ) to attend and ride mountain bikes with them. These two are a perfect match and are both awesome humans in their own right, so it's no question where I should be on this date.

I will SO miss seeing y'all at the Monterey ride, though! This looks like it's shaping up to be an awesome ride with all sorts of neat TE'ers. I think I actually had Char convinced to come to the ride before she made these OTHER plans. How COULD she??? Perhaps we can do another one before the summer's out?? AG??? Hehe...look at me, already asking for another one.....

So, consider me "Damn #3". Sorry, gals....next time, with luck!!!!

I know. I thought of that also. We'll keep trying.

I haven't been able to think of a durn thing to do in Scottsdale itself. Old Town is walkable and good window shopping but expensive. Rage Cycles isn't that far away if you don't mind hoofing it but if it's hot you'll want to hang out at the pool.

If it is overcast with the monsoon season, the sun won't hurt as much so walking isn't as bad. Stores stay open pretty late due to the heat and tourists.
