The distance from the crook of my thumb (where the thumb joins the hand) to my middle finger is 13 cm. If a woman's pelvis is smaller than 12 cm from the symphysis pubis to the sacral promentory, she may have trouble getting the baby out. We actually measure our hands in midwifery school. So, as long I can't touch somebody's sacral promentory, she's good to go!
