If you are looking at touring bikes, you should be able to get a Long Haul Trucker for under $1k. Sweet bomb-proof steel bike, road bars, bar-end shifters. I've not ridden an Aurora so I don't know how they compare. The LHT should be find on gravel, and it comes with nice tires - at least mine did.
