Thanks for the suggestions and helping me narrow my choices. The Aurora is really cute and there's a Jamis dealer close to home. Felt and Giant are sold by the same LBS that's on my way home from work so I'll check them both out.

Jamis is one of the few bigger companies that makes really nice steel bikes. They make aluminum and carbon ones, too, but they do make some smooth steel bikes. I would not hesitate to get another one (mine is 10 years old and going very strong).

tulip: I am thinking of an Aurora or a Bosa nova. Did you try both? How does the Aurora fit you, and is it ok on gravel?

I have a Jamis Coda, and I'm not in the market for a new bike these days. I have not tried the Bossa Nova or the Aurora. The Coda is great on gravel with 700x35 tires. I do miss the drop bars, though. Originally Posted by Rubylvr

If you are looking at touring bikes, you should be able to get a Long Haul Trucker for under $1k. Sweet bomb-proof steel bike, road bars, bar-end shifters. I've not ridden an Aurora so I don't know how they compare. The LHT should be find on gravel, and it comes with nice tires - at least mine did.
