Oakleaf, pretty sure you are right. Funny thing (not so funny??) is I had this bike at one of the lbs's and asked them about new tires. The guy (not my normal guy) shrugged and said mine were fine and looked good. I should have gone with my gut feeling and replaced them then.

While I am bummed it happened before my ride - I am very happy it didn't happen during! And about a month out from my big 170 mile ride. Good time for buying new tires.

Not a bad idea to keep a set of new tires on hand for times like this. We always have a few new spares out in the shed. DH buys them when they go on sale.

Good idea! I ended up putting on some Continental 4 Seasons and the guys at the LBS went ahead and did some warranty tweaks on my bike for me. One more reason to be happy it happened this morning before the ride: there was a 20% chance of showers/tstorms and they started rolling in at 11am when I would have been 25 miles from my car. Things happen for a reason! Oh well.

    What LBS was this?

I'm guessing you were feeling unstable while cornering with those tires...
