(((Blueberry))) Boy, that sounds like fun. Not. Maybe they need visual cues. Like "Please take off your shoes" and "Please lock the door" signs where appropriate. Some people just can't do without visual prompts. I have lots of PDFs for signs like that and will happily share. Good luck with the house.
